Dan & Don, Project #2, Construction Day # 1
(11:15) (Dan sketching and
Don watching)
Don: Hey Dan, maybe like= (11:16)
Roth: Glue gun is in the back.
Dan: Here,
here, here and here okay with pulleys on them.
Don: Yeah.
Dan: Hook
the pulley on, hook the weight on here. Hit this make a thing right here, and
stop right here and the truck will be right here.
M: Do
you guys have your design plan yet?
Don: Yeah,
weÕre just thinking about it, like we know what it is. (11:17)
Dan: Into
the back of the truck.
Don: We
need to make it
Dan: The
truck will be up here and it will be easier because we can make this ramp
higher.
Don: Well,
how much wood do we have? What should we get started on today? (they both get
up to collect their supplies)
Dan: Okay.
Don.
Don: See
this is what I brought (referring to the large block of wood they later use as
a support)
Dan: IÕll
cut it here
Don: Wait
IÕll show you my idea. (11:18)
Dan: Don,
Don, Don put this back. This will be on here like this. ??? and the pulleys
across right?
Don: IÕm
gonna get, IÕm gonna get (Dan gets up to get more supplies)
Dan: See
Don like these and cut in pieces.
Don: Where
did you get those?
Dan: Cut
these in half, cut these here and here and put these across (11:19)
Don: Well,
IÕll just show you what I was thinking. Remember that slide? We could attach a
string through it, okay, hereÕs our pulleys, okay? The pulleys and then thereÕs
a string.
Dan: Okay
Don we could use like an elastic band sort of and pull it and it goes wooooo
Don: Okay
yeah it is 100.
Dan: We
could make it like a clothesline.
??: Do
you guys have any extra wood?
Don: Nope.
Do you have any? We need all the wood. We need all our wood.
Roth: (speaking
to Laura, Jennifer and Devin who are sitting right behind Dan and Don) As much
as you want. It has to be 100. 100 or more. See when you calculate the
advantage. (11:20)
Don: OK,
Dan draw what you were thinking? (Dan draws on DonÕs paper) Draw on this one
then you have more room.
Roth: When
you draw your machine see if it gives you an advantage.
Dan: Okay
thereÕs like ??? comes down here and goes across and pulleys.
Don: How
many are we going to have?
Dan: We
can get pulleys from ?? we can have put the garage here and like when the truck
comes it pulls it up here, (11:21) drops it off here, and then string right
here.
Don: CouldnÕt
we hook it on?
Dan: Yeah,
with a paper clip (gestures to indicate folding of paper clip) hook it on, it
slides down here and it drops off.
Don: We
can take it back.
Dan: Just
drops it off.
Don: We
can take it back.
Dan: Like
you know when you do a clothesline you do it like that or we can just move this
along here and then turn around.
Don: And
the truck=
Sylvia: Guys,
guys can I have some wood?
D&D: No,
we need all the wood we can get, sorry.
Don: Dan,
letÕs just do this. (Dan goes to talk to Adrian) (11:22) Dan, Dan, letÕs do
this okay.
Dan: Okay.
Don: Where
did that pencil go? Did you steal that pencil.
Dan: No,
I put it back in here.
Don: Okay
so if we did this.
Dan: We
could have this and then like that.
Don: ThatÕs
a bit too high. No, cut it. What we need is like. Okay, hold on. WeÕre going to
use the Tonka truck right? (Don gets up to get his truck) Hey Dan.
Dan: What?
Don: WeÕre
going to use this right?
Dan: Yeah,
but you donÕt need it right now.
Don: No,
but I need to see something. We might need a bigger board right?
Dan: But
we can have, IÕve got a little one.
Don: Oh
you do? All right. (11:23) (Don returns the truck and Dan turns around to talk
with Jennifer, playing with her miniature lever) Dan. Dan, Dan.
Laura: Do
you have any nails we could use?
Dan: No.
Don: So
Dan, okay. LetÕs saw these okay. (to an unseen student behind him) DonÕt it
hurts. Well it does. Okay, wait wait wait. (Dan approximating measure of stick
with his hands, Don grabs his ruler and takes over)
Don: Oh
Dan, use a ruler okay? (Dan bends down to find his carpenterÕs pencil)
Leanne: Do
you have a screwdriver?
Don: NO.
Leanne: Yeah,
yeah, yeah. Please.
Chris: Can
we have a hammer? (Don hands Leanne the screwdriver)
Don: Okay?
No wait, wait wait. (11:24) Okay, how big do we want to make them?
Dan: Well,
this is, I just want to see.
Don: Not
30.
Dan: I
know, I just want to see how many. ThatÕs 3 feet.
Laura: Can
I borrow a hammer?
Dan: I
only have one hammer and I need it pretty soon.
Don: How
about 20. (Dan measures and marks the wood) I get to cut. (11:25). WeÕll go
outside and cut okay. Okay, Dan get your saw. (Dan still marking where to cut
on the wood)
Devin: Hey
Dan do you have your drill?
Dan: Yeah,
but you canÕt use it.
Don: Okay
to the Batmobile. LetÕs go outside and cut it.
Dan: We
still need to do this one.
Don: Oh
Dan. WeÕll do it after okay. (Dan finishes marking)
Dan: No
we need to do it.
Don: Okay.
Get your saw.
Dan: Hold
on. (11:26) (Dan and Don moving across the classroom to go saw the wood)
Don: Can
we just go outside?
Roth: To
do what?
Don: Can
we just go outside to saw the wood?
Roth: Okay,
go ahead.
??: They
want to fool around.
Roth: What
are you guys working on?
Dan: A
ramp so itÕs like a clothesline pulley. Ramp with pulleys on it.
Roth: Uh-huh.
You have a ramp and pulleys.
Dan: Yeah.
So you drop it and it comes down on pulleys. (Don holds the wood and Dan saws)
Roth: I
see you have some experience in cutting.
Dan: Yeah.
Roth: Oh
good (Don stands on the wood) (11:27) (Dan cuts 2 pieces of wood)
Don: Watch
your fingers.
Dan: I
know.
M: So
youÕre making three equal pieces is that what youÕre doing? (11:28)
Don: Yeah.
Six.
M: You
have the other piece too.
Dan: You
want to do this one? (Dan passes the saw on to Don and he stands on the wood to
hold it steady).
Don: IÕm
left handed.
Maryam: Okay
outside. Go over here and stand on it. (seem to be imitating Dan and DonÕs
actions) Jess. (11:29) LetÕs go inside.
Don: Is
that the line?
Dan: Yeah,
the line is right there.
Don: Okay.
(cuts it, but leaves a bit of extra wood sticking out)
Dan: Cut
this one on the line there. (11:30) Here, you take this.
(they go back to their desk space) (11:31)
Dan: Okay,
Don this will be the one that every (section missed as the camera was plugged back
in)
Don: Wait,
wait wait. I got an idea.
Dan: Okay
put the nails in.
Don: I
got nails. (he starts digging through his coffee tin of supplies) A drill?
Dan: Yeah,
just to get it started.
Don: But
you got to drill it on the other side.
Dan: Yeah
I know. (11:32)
Don: This
side is better, letÕs use this side. (Dan setting up the drill). Dan. Go.
Dan: Just
sec. (Dan gets ready to drill)
Don: Wait,
wait, wait. That will be there. Okay. (Dan drills a hold where Don indicated)
(11:33)
Chris: But
those science teachers theyÕre just the coolest.
Don: (laughing)
Roth: Everything
is going okay here.
D&D: Yeah.
??: Dan
I do not like you.
??: ThatÕs
why youÕre blushing and blushing.
Dan: Don,
can you hold it right there. Can you hold it.
Don: How
are we going to do this? We could drill another hole. (11:34)
Dan: Hey
do you have the glue gun?
Don: Yeah.
We have to let it warm up though. (Dan drills another hole) I got some more
glue too.
Dan: Drilling
the other hole. (starts drilling)
Don: ItÕs
over too much. You gotta move it in. DonÕt put it all the way through. Dan,
donÕt drill it through all the way, okay. (11:35). (Dan measures and marks his
drill spot and begins drilling) Dan, donÕt drill it all the way. DonÕt, donÕt.
Not too much, then we can nail it in. Dan, okay take it out. (Dan only drills
part way through) Okay Dan. IÕll get this going now. (to the observer,
referring to the researcherÕs power bar where the video camera is plugged) Is
it okay if I plug this in there?
Jessica: Do you
have any extra wood we could use?
Dan: No.
(11:36)
Don: Did
you drill that one all the way through.
Dan: No.
Don: Okay
good.
Maryam: Does
anybody have any extra wood?
Don: No.
(11:37). Whoa, Dan itÕs not ready yet.
Dan: Yes
it is. I just pushed it in all that way.
Don: No
it isnÕt. YouÕve gotta let it warm up for about 10 minutes or it gets all
stringy. (Dan playing with glue gun)
M: What
happens if itÕs not ready?
Don: It
gets all stringy.
M: ItÕs
not all melted.
Don: Yeah.
Dan: Don
we need a new glue stick. (11:38) (Don gets another glue stick and starts
pushing it in.)
Don: Just
push that in there. (hands him a glue stick)
Dan: Hey
Don, whereÕs the board?
Don: IÕm
getting it, just sec. (Dan sticks the board on and holds it) Put it there.
M: So
youÕre gluing that opposite to where you drilled the hole?
Don: Yeah,
so it will stay.
M: So
you can get it started.
Don: Does
that hurt? (11:39). Does it?
Dan: No.
Leanne: Here
Dan
Don: Thanks.
(Dan starts nailing board in, but pushes support out)
Dan: Oh
way to go Don. (11:40)
Don: Well,
at least we got it started.
Dan: Hold
it in.
Don: IÕm
trying. Hit the bottom. (Dan knocks the support back up and pushing the nail
back out) Here give me the hammer. (Don tries to re-hammer nail in and Dan
holds it)
M: Is
there any way you can do it where the support is under here?
Don: But
then. (they set it up on top of the desk)
M: ThatÕs
a good idea.
Don: Did
it go through? Okay. LetÕs do the other one now.
Dan: Oh
Don.
Don: Is
that hot? (11:41) Oh Dan wait, donÕt.
M: Too
late?
Don: Well,
this hole isnÕt drilled all the way through.
(Dan sticks board on)
Don: This
hole isnÕt all the way through.
Dan: I
know.
Don: Does
that hurt?
Dan: No.
Don: Want
to turn it the other way and push on it?
Dan: Okay.
(11:42) Okay I get to nail this one in. (Dan nails while Don holds.) (11:43)
Don: Did
it got through? Okay, hold on.
Dan: How
long does this have to be?
Don: Wait
he has that tape. (11:43) (Don goes to get tape measure and they measure
together) 29 and a half, so. Here hold that. ThatÕs 6 foot. (11:44). Okay. WhatÕs
183 minus, 183 minus 29 and a half. (Dan pulls out his science book) Just do
it. (Dan writes down the calculation and starts working it out).
M: WhatÕs
that youÕre calculating?
Don: Just
to see how much board we need.
Dan: Minus
what?
Don: 29
and a half. (11:45)
Dan: 153
and a half.
Don: Okay,
we need 153 and a half. (gets out tape measure to see how long this is).
Whoops, I messed up. 72. I used centimeters instead of inches. Okay, 72 minus
29 and a half (Dan opens his book again to perform the calculation)
M: ItÕs
supposed to be 200 centimeters.
Don: Yeah
200 centimeters.
M: Dr.
Roth said about 6 feet which is the same as 200 centimeters.
Don: Yeah.
(11:46)
Dan: 43
and a half. Don, 43 and a half.
Don: Do
we have science tomorrow?
M: No.
Don: No.
M: Not
until Monday.
Don: Till
Monday.
M: You
have Monday to work on it and then youÕll be presenting Wednesday and Thursday.
Don: Next
week?
M: So
Monday you have the same time to work on it from recess until lunch and then
you present Wednesday and Thursday.
Don: Are
you busy Tuesday, Dan?
Dan: Tuesday?
Yeah, soccer.
Don: What
about Monday.
Dan: I
have soccer.
M: What
about tomorrow or on the weekend? (11:47)
Don: Yeah
we could do it on the weekend.
Dan: Yeah,
cause my Dad could help us. IÕve got like toothpicks so we could do like
toothpicks with pulleys attached.
Don: Maybe
we should get those dowels instead. Yeah remember.
(they go to get supplies from the back of the room.
Dan comes back with popsicle sticks.) (11:48)
Don: Dan,
what we should do is a 25 gram weight and then just get a piece of string and
right now just see right now if it is a mechanical advantage. (Dan starts
gluing popsicle sticks) Dan, if you need more glue itÕs on my desk. (11:49)
(Don goes to front of room to try using scale to weight piece of wood) Dan,
Dan, I just want to do this to try it. Hang on (adds another glue stick) Hey
Dan. Whoa!
Dan: (he
glues popsicle sticks on) (11:50) (Dan wipes excess glue around to help attach
popsicle sticks, Don glues popsicle sticks on another support).
Don: Dan,
letÕs just do this to test it. I just want to test it. Dan, itÕs just a test.
Just get some string. (he unwraps some string)
M: So
youÕre going to test it?
Don: Yeah,
to see if it has a mechanical advantage. (11:51)
M: ThatÕs
a good idea.
Don: This?
(hands him the piece of wood he measured with the scale).
Dan: IÕm
going to go get the scale.
Don: I
donÕt know what it was exactly. (he untangles a shoe lace, checks the strength
of the glue and ties the shoe lace around the popsicle sticks)
Dan: ItÕs
100.
Don: Is
it? (11:52)
Dan: Exactly
(Dan ties a hook to the wooden block while Don adjusts the shoelace)
Don: We
shouldnÕt use shoelaces.
Dan: Well
weÕre just measuring it. (Dan attaches the wooden block to the shoelace and it
stretches down to the ground)
Don: Yeah.
Okay now we need the scale again. Move that up.
Dan: Well
thereÕs going to be pulleys.
Don: It
canÕt be dragging on the ground.
Dan: I
know weÕre just using it to see=
Don: I
know we need the scale so we can like pull it (11:53) (Don goes to get the
scale)
Dan: Well
just to see.
M: So
is this what the whole thing is going to be like just longer?
Dan: Yeah.
Don: Just
pull it like that. No wait you gotta move it down. (they attach the scale and
try moving the block of wood with their machine) (11:54) ThereÕs a knot in it.
Dan: 350
or so.
Don: Wait
just try it again. You ran out of the. Okay when you try to pull how much is
it? Wait okay now stop. (11:55) Okay itÕs 300 Dan.
Dan: ItÕs
300.
Don: Okay.
Now, um, Dan.
(Don goes back to their old machine)
Don:
(to the observer) Can we take these pulleys off?
M: Well,
we were going to show those for parent night so we would have them, but you can
use them.
??: Can
we use the screwdriver? Dan, Dan (whistles) Can I see this for a second IÕm not
going to use it. (11:56) Dan, Dan.
(they both go back and look at JenniferÕs project)
Don: Dan,
Dan. Dan, Dan letÕs get back to this okay?
??: Here
Dan, we didnÕt need it. (11:57)
(Don puts glue on top of the popsicle sticks, Dan
smoothing it out with his fingers)
Don: YouÕre
going to burn yourself. (Dan uses a nail to smooth the glue out) Oh you know
what you do, you add glue like this.
Devin: Hey,
Dan can I use your drill?
Dan: What?
Devin: For
drilling holes.
Dan: In
what?
Devin: Wood.
Don: Okay.
(11:58)
??: Can
I borrow your hammer? (Dan hands the hammer to unseen student)
Don: I
got an idea. Maybe we should put like double. IÕll get the glue gun. IÕll glue
you hold. (Dan starts gluing despite DonÕs intent. He adds another glue stick)
What are you doing youÕre missing the hole? (11:59) Quick, Dan. (Dan attaches
second layer of popsicle sticks) Whoa! (glue dripping) I got an idea, we can
melt the glue (12:00). (Don gets a chunk of hardened glue that had dripped
earlier and sticks it onto the other popsicle sticks. Then he adds some more
glue from the gun.)
Scott: Hey
Dan can I use your screwdriver for a minute?
Don: Yeah,
but donÕt be long. Dan. Okay Dan, hold these. (Don removes the chunk of glue he
had tried melting and adds new glue. Dan sticks the popsicle sticks on using a
nail to smooth it around) (12:01).
Scott: Thanks.
(12:02)
Dan: YouÕre
welcome.
Don: Oh
Dan, I thought of what might be good. Put glue in here (along the length of the
popsicle sticks). Wait, wait, wait. Dan. Just shove it in the end. No not there,
underneath. (Don holds the now partially attached popsicle sticks apart while
Dan adds more glue) (12:03) DonÕt. Okay now put the other stick in. AHHH!
(shaking hand after burning it on the hot glue) Come on Dan, donÕt do that one
yet. (Don trying to push the two layers of popsicle sticks together with a
nail)
(12:04) (Dan tries to separate the layers of popsicle
sticks and glue them himself, but Don joins him to hold the sticks apart for
him)
Don: Okay,
now do the other side. Hang on.
Dan: Hang
on. (Dan uses a clothes pin to hold the two layers together).
M: ThatÕs
a good idea.
Don: Good
idea. Go like that, we need one over there. (12:05) WhereÕs your drill?
Dan: DevinÕs
using it. (12:06)
Don: There
we go. Do you have like=
Dan: No
we need string.
Don: I
have string.
Dan: Yeah,
thatÕs good.
Roth: Okay
can we um.
Don: Oh
no. Wait, wait. How much is it Dan?
Roth: Okay.
(12:07)
Don: Dan.
Roth: Stop
everyone.
Don: Dan.
Roth: Stop
everyone. Can we? We have to clean up now. Please clean up as quickly as possible.
Clean up as quickly as possible. Put the stuff that you donÕt need in your
boxes=
Don: Dan.
Dan: No
we donÕt need it. ThatÕs to hold the pulley.
Don: Dan,
weÕll do that after.
Roth: Please
clean up. Clean up here, can you please?
Don: Dan,
Dan, donÕt do that. (Dan starts to glue something) (12:08)
Roth: Um,
Daniel, please clean up. Jenni. Chris in your seat please.
Don: Dan.
Roth: Please,
clean up. (Dan continues gluing) Get your stuff together.
Devin: This
works really good.
Roth: Don
and Devin can you guys please clean up. Laura and Devin. Shamir your stuff
please. You want to go to lunch and before lunch we gotta finish. (12:09) Don
and Dan you gotta clean up.
Don: Yep.
(they start cleaning up)
