Infinite Ulysses

Amanda Visconti, friend and contributor to the MVP, has launched the Infinite Ulysses Project at:

Amanda attended the MVP-sponsored Versioning and Collation Course at DHSI 2013 (taught by Drs. Stephen Ross and J. Matthew Huculak), in which she had the opportunity to work with our honoured guest lecturer, Dr. Hans Walter Gabler.

The MVP congratulates Amanda on this momentous achievement of textual scholarship, and we are pleased that our SSHRC-funded work is igniting new modes of scholarship and learning.

Here is Amanda describing Infinite Ulysses:

“What happens to complex texts—especially those purposefully authored to be hypertextual, chaotic, and encyclopedic, like Ulysses—when a participatory digital edition places them under heavy and thorough annotation and conversation? Infinite Ulysses is a public, participatory digital edition built on the Modernist Versions Project’s transcription of the first Ulysses printing. Like the MVP, I’m interested in allowing a broader, more public audience to access modernist works. The MVP’s scholarly preparation of the text and its CC licensing allowed me to base my project on a reliable text and thus make certain promises to edition users about what they were reading. Previously, the only digital transcription freely available was the Project Gutenberg e-text, which offers no clear methodology for its transcription and thus can’t be trusted to represent any one text that Joyce intended or countenanced.

Having the MVP text as my project basis allowed me to explore design for digital editions that welcome and engage the public in literary conversations. Being able to offer Ulysses as my proof-of-concept—rather than some lesser-known work—allowed the site to generate enough reader interest that I gathered significant site analytics to add quantitative backing to my theories about how people read complex works.”
