Ernest Hemingway, in our time
edited by James Gifford

The Modernist Versions Project is pleased to make available a critical edition of Ernest Hemingway’s very scarce first major work, in our time: The 1924 Text and “In Our Time” & “They All Made Peace—What Is Peace?”: The 1923 Text. A hand-corrected .txt file is provided for digital scholarship/textual analysis.

Very few authors can claim to have shaped the dominant prose style of the twentieth century as Hemingway did, and it all began in the 1923 “vignettes” in The Little Review and the 1924 Paris edition of in our time. The 1924 book was produced in a print run of only 170 copies. It became largely unavailable after it was superseded by the expanded and revised 1925 edition that continued to undergo minor revisions until the 1930 Scribner’s edition added “On the Quai at Smyrna” to precede the numbered chapters of the book. In both his public persona and literary criticism, Hemingway became a figure of myth: the rugged, masculine “Papa” in contrast to his traumatized, wounded characters. The origins of this conflicted mythos are on display here at the outset of his career. Readers of “In Our Time” and in our time see his “theory of omission” or the iceberg method at work for the first time as well as the themes of suffering, faith, emasculation, war, and the bullfight. These editions makes the 1923 and 1924 texts available in critical editions intended for scholars and classroom use with an introduction and annotations to support student readers.

The PDF is available in 8.5″x11″ for standard printing and 6″x9″ for printing as a book. The epub includes links for annotations and embedded page markers matching the PDF, which will be visible in ereaders and software capable of displaying these features.
