The Algorithmic Ulysses

Ulysses CoverThe MVP is proud to host–in collaboration with the University of Victoria Libraries, the University of Tulsa McFarlin Library, and Dr. Hans Walter Gabler (& editorial team)–corrected .txt, and .docx files of James Joyce’s Ulysses in three separate versions.

For the first time in history, scholars can access and compare the 1922 Shakespeare & Co. edition of Ulysses; the Samuel Roth Two Worlds Monthly pirated periodical edition (1926-27);  and the 1929 Roth pirated edition. In the coming weeks, we will be adding the corrected and reset Shakespeare & Co. edition  (1926).

These are copies intended for algorithmic analysis; we will be providing reading copies in the future, but for now if you would like to read Ulysses online, we recommend Amanda Visconti’s Infinite Ulysses or our PDF copies posted elsewhere on this site.

We invite digital humanities scholars to use these texts for research and teaching. The MVP and collaborators are committed to scholarly open scholarship and free resources for students and colleagues. In the spirit of openness and socially created scholarship, please share your work with our team; we’ll point back to you.

These files are made available thanks to the collaboration among libraries and universities in Canada, the United States, and Europe. The University of Victoria provided page images for Two Worlds Monthly and the 1922 Shakespeare & Co. edition; The University of Tulsa, McFarlin Library provided the page images for the 1929 (Samuel Roth) pirated edition of Ulysses, and Dr. Hans Walter Gabler is providing the 1926 edition; Gabler and team also processed the text using TUSTEP.

Gabler’s research suggests that Ulysses was pirated twice by Samuel Roth. The 1926 Two Worlds Monthly incomplete version of Ulysses was based on the 1922 Shakespeare & Co. edition. The 1929 complete pirated version was based on the reset 1926 Ulysses edition by Shakespeare & Co. What will you discover?
