It’s all about YoU(lysses)

The Modernist Versions Project’s Year of Ulysses (YoU) initiative will introduce James Joyce’s masterpiece to its widest audience ever, provoke people to read it, support them as they do so, and bring this novel of the everyday back into everyday life.
Thanks to the remarkable efforts of MVP associates Patrick Belk and Matthew Kochis (both at the University of Tulsa) as well as the generosity of the McFarlin Library, the MVP now owns high-quality scans of the first edition of Ulysses as it was published in February 1922 by Sylvia Beach’s famed Shakespeare & Company bookstore. In the spirit of the Liberate Ulysses movement and in honour of the 90th birthday of Joyce’s masterpiece, we are serially publishing these scans online—just as Ulysses was originally serialized in the pages of the Little Review—and providing a robust framework for (re-)discovering the novel.
The Year of Ulysses initiative involves not only the public release of these scans but also lectures, Twitter chats, an art competition, and various other events anchored in Joyce’s novel. Join us as we celebrate 90 years of Ulysses!
DIGITAL VERSION OF ULYSSES (1922, 1ST EDITION)Â
Every three weeks between Bloomsday 2012 and Bloomsday 2013, we will release a new chapter of the original 1922Â Ulysses. The chapters will be made available in both TXT and OCR-corrected, portable document formats. Starting with the Telemachiad, they will be published in the “texts” section of this site.
We will also be facilitating a series of lectures by prominent Joyceans, to be recorded and posted on this website beginning at the end of June 2012 and continuing until Bloomsday 2013. Lectures will be released two weeks after each chapter and will focus on an aspect of the following themes: Ulysses at 90, Liberate Ulysses, Ulysses Today.
Confirmed speakers so far include Robert Spoo, Terrence Kileen, Ann Fogarty, Sam Slote, Hans Walter Gabler, Amanda Sigler, and William Kupinse.
YoU TWITTER CHAT
In addition to the lectures, we are sponsoring a series of live Twitter chats to accompany the online, serialized release of Ulysses. One week after each chapter is released, we will have a guest host moderate a two-hour online discussion on Twitter, using the hashtag #yearofulysses. The chat will be carried on asynchronously for the following two weeks until the next chapter is released, and then resume one week later with a new moderator, focusing on the newly released chapter.
ULYSSES ART COMPETITION
The  MVP’s Year of Ulysses initiative will be crowned by a year-long international art competition. Featuring a grand prize of $500, and judged by an international panel chaired by Robert Amos, the “It’s All About YoU Art Competition” invites artists working in any medium to submit documentation of original artworks related to Ulysses today.
