Site Redesign
Tuesday, May 16, 2006, 09:38 AM
I've redesigned my site to bring it in line with my new role as Manager of the CASS PMO.

I'll be adding some more relevant content as time is permitting, but you can likely imagine that I'm quite busy developing the framework to actually bring the PMO into existence.

Help Desk Renovations/Relocation
Monday, April 10, 2006, 09:19 AM
Last year, there were some renovations in the basement of Clearihue near the point where A-wing meets B-wing. Unfortunately, these renovations affected wheelchair access to some of the labs and facilities in A-wing. For example, if the Help Desk is closed, there is no way for a wheelchair to get to the basement labs or to the CALL facility.

As a result of this, some renovations were suggested to the Help Desk area in order to allow the Help Desk doors to remain open (and thereby maintain wheelchair access) while the Help Desk itself was closed. This was to be achieved by means of installing a new door and a roll-shutter for security.

These renovations began today. During construction, the Help Desk has been temporarily relocated down the hall in one of the lab classrooms (Clearihue A015). Operations should be more or less transparent to the UVic community, though they will need to follow the signs if they decide to visit the Help Desk in person.

Projects - Social Sciences / Math Building
Tuesday, April 4, 2006, 10:39 AM
I'm sitting in on a meeting for SS/M that has been called by Pat. Lance would like me to be present as an observer for the purposes of learning and understanding the processes we go through in CASS for new buildings.

This afternoon is part two of my Mearns Centre meeting; the first one went well and I got a good sense of who the various stakeholders are and how they interact at this stage of the project. I started going through my notes on where IT was mentioned or whenever I thought there could be a socio-technological impact on anything that was said; I am nearly finished this task so I'm looking forward to seeing what we do next.

The above is a great learning experience for me, mostly because it's such a new and novel experience.

Jabber Testing - Gaim Problems and Pandion
Thursday, March 30, 2006, 12:48 PM
Gaim has been mis-behaving for me as of late. For example, Scott shows up as offline but I know he's online in the server admin interface. If I log out and back in, he appears online properly.

As a result, I decided to give Spark a try:

Pros: Small, simple
Cons: Very feature-limited, Java-based so memory-intensive
(E.g. I couldn't disable tabbed messaging, something I dislike.)

Not satisfied with Spark, I decided to try Pandion, and I'm pleasantly surprised. It has all the features of Gaim, plus more -- such as avatars, and the ability to block users. It's small, doesn't seem to use much memory, and looks pretty stable at version 2.5.

Projects - Mearns Centre for Learning
Thursday, March 30, 2006, 12:43 PM
I'm attending my first Capital Projects-related meeting tomorrow; it is for the Mearns Centre for Learning.

A few months ago, Lance instructed me to read through the Program of Requirements documentation for the McPherson Library expansion project and look for IT-related issues of note.

I read through the document -- a very interesting read -- and made notes wherever IT was mentioned or whenever I thought there could be a socio-technological impact on anything that was said.

It reminds me of Risk Management planning from my MCPM course; looking for Cause -> Event -> Effect of possible risks. Basically, you look for definite facts that can cause a potential risk event to occur resulting in an effect on outcomes. The idea is to decide whether you can eliminate any of those three, whether you should, and by how much.
