Student advising
Undergraduate advising
The Political Science Department has Undergraduate Advisors, whom you can meet with during their regular office hours. Before to your appointment, make sure you have all necessary paperwork with you. This might include a copy of your unofficial transcript, course outlines, or anything else which will help your dvisor assist you.
The advisors are able to help new and current students with their Political Science major or minor requirements. Most questions about the requirements for the undergraduate programs in Political Science can be answered through the links that follow. Questions concerning general admissions requirements and transfer credits should be directed to the University Admissions office. Questions concerning University requirements should be directed to the Advising Centre for Humanities, Science and Social Sciences. Inquiries about individual courses in Political Science should be directed to the relevant instructor.
If your question cannot be addressed through any of these means, please contact a Political Science Undergraduate Advisor by email or during his/her office hours:
Janni Aragon, SSM A308, jaragon@uvic.ca
Warren Magnusson, SSM A341, wmagnus@uvic.ca
If you have questions about other departments and/or faculties, please see the appropriate department of Academic Advising. New students should familiarize themselves with the Social Sciences Academic Advising information on the UVic Advising website.
Graduate advising
Dr. Oliver Schmidtke, the Graduate Advisor gradpol@uvic.ca, tel. 250-853-3527, SSM A320 will go over your program plan, and give you some advice about selecting courses, arranging for thesis supervision, and planning your work for the year ahead. The Graduate Advisor must approve your program before it is registered with Graduate Studies. Any changes to an approved program require permission. So, it's good to establish contact early and maintain it during your time as a student. The Graduate Advisor is there to help you get through the program if you face a crisis of some sort or just want some general advice.
