Research Assistance

Volunteer Research Assistant Opportunities:

Helen Williams

Volunteer position

Cognitive Psychology (Memory)

I am looking for a research assistant (or two) to help me administer a computer-based experiment to undergraduates. The task is a recognition memory experiment with participants making judgments about their subjective experience of recognition (recollection/confidence) for each word that they say they recognize. We are interested in understanding the processes by which people make recognition decisions and how these processes are experienced consciously by the individual. Ideally you would have an interest in cognitive psychology, and memory in particular, but that is not essential.

Duties:

- Administrative tasks and scheduling

- Data collection

- Data entry (minimal)

Looking for reliable and responsible students with

- Good communication skills

- Enthusiasm about cognitive psychology

- Excellent time management skills

Expected hours per week:

- 2 positions at 5-8 hours/week. Volunteers must commit to a set number of hours per week.

If you are interested in this opportunity or would like further information about the project please email Helen at helenw@uvic.ca.

Emanuela Yeung (Dr. Mueller)

Volunteer Position

Developmental

Research Study:
I am looking for volunteer RAs to assist me with a study looking at the relation between language ability and executive functioning (planning and problem-solving skills) in preschoolers (ages 3-5 years). RAs will primarily assist with data collection and will be trained on a large battery of cognitive and language measures. I am looking for students who can commit at least 4-5 hours per week (1 morning or afternoon for testing + travel time to local preschools).

If interested, please email me (eyeung at uvic dot ca) and tell me a little bit about yourself (what year you're in, any career goals, general interests), and include a copy of your CV/resume and unofficial transcript. Thanks!

Mario Baldassari -Cognitive

Volunteer Position

Graduate student Mario Baldassari is currently looking for volunteers to
act as confederate criminals in a mock crime study, beginning immediately
and continuing on into next semester.

Requirements: a fair amount of involvement in the next three weeks to take
photographs, build a lineup, and conduct several pilot testing sessions of
lineups. Candidates should be comfortable having his/her photo taken in
order to be included as a foil in the lineup if needed. Next semester, the
time commitment may increase to once or twice a week. Due to the nature of
the situation, though, we'll only need someone for the first 2-5 minutes
every half hour or so. This is an excellent opportunity for those
interested in eye witness identification and gaining exposure to research.

If you are interested, please stop by Cornett A193 to speak with Mario
regarding the position. If you have any questions, you can email Mario at
mjbldssr@uvic.ca.

Lesley Baker- Developmental, Clinical, Social & Cognitive Understanding

Volunteer position

I am currently looking for a research assistant to help me administer a
number of tasks to adolescents with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders
(FASD). The tasks involve reading through social scenarios and guiding the
participant through a series of questions. This opportunity will give you
direct experience working with clinical populations.

To be eligible you need to have an interest in working with clinical
populations. Any experience in this area would be an asset. The assessment
piece of the study involves three testing periods separated by 8 weeks.
During each testing period you would be asked to help test approximately 8
children over the course of two weeks. Time required for each participant
would be approximately 30 minutes.

In you are intersted in this opportunity please email Lesley at
lesleyb@uvic.ca.

Sincerely,
Lesley Baker
