Press Release Assignment

Value: 5% of course grade

Due Date: Saturday, November 26

Your Role

For this assignment, you are a writer for the appropriate federal, provincial, or municipal government office.

Your Task

Write a 250-300 word press release on behalf of the appropriate government office. Your press release can do one of the following:

  • announce the policy recommendation you're writing for the final assignment as if it were real (e.g., a new plan to address homelessness in Victoria, restored funding for the arts), or
  • make any appropriate announcement from any level of government (e.g., announce a ban in your municipality on the cosmetic use of pesticides); in this case, make your announcement as realistic as possible and invent details as needed

Samples and Tips

For sample B.C. government press releases, visit the web site of any ministry or organization. Most of these sites post their latest press releases on their main page. The federal government posts its latest press releases at What's New at the Canada Site.

Read Notes on Writing a Press Release for guidance in writing your press release.

Press Release Editing Workshop: November 25

Bring a draft of your document to class. You will have the chance to discuss any problems you're having with the assignment and to exchange drafts with another student for peer editing. Don't miss the workshop; if you do (without a legitimate excuse), you will lose 10% from your grade for the assignment.

Submitting Your Assignment

Name your file yourlastnamepr.doc (e.g., Doylepr.doc) and send it to me as an e-mail attachment by 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, November 26.
