Evaluation Criteria


A

  • Writing is highly readable, coherent, concise and well organized, with a clear and effective pattern of development. Writing contains no errors of grammar, diction or usage; any mechanical errors are minor.
  • Content, organization, style and design reflect careful and insightful analysis of the purpose and target audience.
  • Overall, a great deal of effort has been put into the assignment (based on the thoroughness of planning, revisions, editing, and document design).
  • All requirements of the assignment have been met or exceeded.
  • Presentation is well organized and highly appealing.

B

  • Writing is readable and concise. Ideas are presented effectively, with the writing following a consistent organization and pattern. Writing contains some errors of grammar, diction or usage, as well as mechanical errors.
  • Content, organization, style and design are appropriate to the purpose and target audience.
  • Overall, a good effort has been put into the assignment (based on the thoroughness of planning, revisions, editing, and document design), but further improvements could be made.
  • All requirements of the assignment have been met.
  • Presentation is neat, organized, and attractive.

C+

  • Writing is readable, but lacks one or more of clarity, organization and conciseness. Writing contains a number of grammatical and mechanical errors.
  • Content, organization, style and design are only somewhat suitable to the purpose and target audience.
  • Overall, some effort has been put into the assignment, but further work is clearly needed.
  • Most requirements of the assignment have been met.
  • Presentation is mostly neat, organized, and attractive.

C

  • Writing lacks clarity, organization and conciseness. Writing needs substantial revisions to the structure and content.
  • Content, organization, style and design reflect little attention to the purpose and target audience.
  • Overall, some effort has been put into the assignment, but much more is clearly needed.
  • Most requirements of the assignment have been met.
  • Presentation is generally neat and attractive.

D

  • Writing lacks focus and coherence. There is an attempt to develop and elaborate ideas, but it is difficult to follow the sequence and understand the relationship among ideas. Frequent errors appear, making communication awkward and at times unclear.
  • Content, organization, style and design are inappropriate given the purpose and target audience.
  • Overall, very little effort has been put into the assignment.
  • Some requirements have been completed.
  • Presentation may or may not be neat, organized, and attractive.

F

  • Submission is incomplete. Writing is poorly organized and unfocussed. Frequent errors make the writing difficult to comprehend.
  • Overall, minimal effort has been put into the assignment.
  • Few requirements have been completed.
  • Presentation may or may not be neat, organized, and attractive.

Notes:

  • Grades of A+ and B+ will be given to work that fully meets the criteria for the grades of A and B respectively; grades of A- and B- will be given to work that only marginally meets the criteria for those grades.
  • Students who wish to dispute a grade must be prepared to show me, with precise examples, how their work meets the criteria for the grade they believe they should have received.
