Activity: Freeze Tag

Organization:             -Equipment needed- 40 balls, 5 bean bags, 6 cones, 10 pinnies two different colors

             -Place Balls in Hula Hoops

-Everyone spread out in the gym floor

-Choose 3-5  Taggers to wear Blue Pinnies

Activity 1 Progressions:

  1. Verbal instructions to the game “Freeze Tag” and instructions to what to do when tagged (eg. Jumping Jacks, Push ups)
  2. After 1 min of play, we stopped the game and added “Defrosters” with Red pinnies and changed up the Freeze taggers.
  3. After another min we switched to new Taggers and Defrosters and also added beanbags to the game.  The beanbags were to be worn on the heads of the defrosters.   If the bag fell off the head, the defroster would have to do one pushup and start over again.
  4. After one more min, balls were added to the game for all the players except the defrosters.  The pinnies once again were switched to those that haven’t had a chance to be a ‘tagger or defroster’.  Now the players had to bounce the ball and tag the players.  The defrosters job stayed the same.

  2. Rotate the defrosters and taggers
  3. Was there enough defrosters, or too many taggers?
  4. Safety in movement

Teaching Style: Command and practice Styles

-The game itself was explained and the tasks were designated.  The Practice style came into play as students had to decide on the most effective way to tag other players.

Extensions/Simplifications:

-increase /decrease playing area

-change the speed of the game eg. skipping, side steps, walk-heal to toe, ect.

-make teams, add strategies

-add or remain taggers/defrosters

-change the balls that were used- Beach ball, volleyball, ect

-change rules for being tagged or dropping bean bag- pushups, sit-ups, give them a choice

Learning Domains:

Cognitive- Students had to be aware of where the freeze taggers’ are at all times, and know where their boundary ends to avoid getting trapped.  Taggers’ use angles to cut off pathways for large groups to increase the chance of tagging people.

Affective/Social- (Taggers) work as a small team to develop better chances of freezing students with good communication.  Players had to be very alert and ready to run from taggers (run with a pack or as an individual.

Psychomotor- On toes, head up, not moving in a straight line.  Increase the intensity as the game progresses. –Walk only>jogging>full out.  Change the freezers’ and the defrosters frequently.
