PE452 – FINAL EXAM (20% or 15%)
Date: Tue. Dec 4th and Wed. Dec 5th
During these last two classes of term you will write
your answer to the final exam. Time
should not be a factor. Exam sheets
will be collected in on Tue Dec 4th and re-distributed on Wed Dec 5th
for completion.
Purpose: To help you articulate how you will teach games in a way that is
supported by the current professional understanding of teaching games.
You are preparing to interview for a job
at a local school. The head of the PE
department shows you around the school.
The head is interested in understanding what a tactical approach to
teaching games is about. In discussion
it becomes apparent that the head holds the following assumptions regarding the
teaching of games:
Students need to learn skills before
they can play the game.
Students do not have the ball skills
to learn the strategies of defense and offense.
The execution of skills is more easily
evaluated than tactical play.
The technical model of games teaching
is easier to manage.
The teacher's role is to transmit
information to students.
At the job interview you are asked the
following questions:
Using ideas you have learned in class, acquired from readings and taken from your experiences teaching students, construct answers to these questions that show how you will teach games in instructional PE to realize the goal of the BC IRP.
You can support your ideas with research, examples and insights from the professional literature.
You can offer an argument that does not simply contrast a technical approach to a skill approach, but one that explains how motor skill learning and tactical learning can be integrated.
You should write a paper of 1500 to 1800 words (6 to 8 sides)
You are allowed one sheet of paper with
notes that should not total more than 450 words (approximately the amount on
this page) to be handed in on Fri. Nov 30th.
Create 200 word or less summaries of the three articles you were assigned. On Fri November 23rd you should come to class prepared with copies of written summaries on the articles you have read (professionalism mark). These summaries will be collected but not marked. Summaries will be used in class to further develop the groups’ understanding of games teaching. You will be given time off from class on Wed November 21st to prepare for this assignment.
