Physical Education Yearly Plan
Physical Education Yearly Plan
2009
Physical education plays a major role in the development of grade sevens. In grade seven students might already have some basic skills needed to complete a game, while others may lack these skills. That is why it is vitally important to create a gym environment that has ongoing differentiated learning that is scaffolded, encouraging, and an overall positive experience. Students in grade seven might also already have a negative attitude to certain games or sports. By creating a space where imagination, creativity, and cooperation is encouraged perhaps these students might grow to enjoy and perhaps look forward to going to PE.
Goals are an extremely important part of our teaching practices. Students must develop their own goals: this can help them become more autonomous, as they have a vested interested in their completion. We believe that short and long-term goal setting is an important part of student development. Structured goals encourage higher success rates, and they can be effective management tools in a classroom for behaviour and achievement. Goals for our students may include being proud of their work, developing confidence in their abilities though fulfilling personal short-term goals, working towards long-term goals, and developing their own learning strategies and reflection abilities.
We intend to ensure that:
•Students will have opportunities to participate in a variety of physical activities.
•Students will develop age-appropriate knowledge and skills for participating productively, and responsible in a range of physical activities.
•Students will develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that enable them to attain and maintain a healthy, active lifestyle.
•Students will develop an understanding of the value of a healthy, active lifestyle. (IRP, 2008)
Our hope is that children feel that they are in a safe and supportive environment and participate to their ability in order to be successful in physical education. We want to inspire them to lead active lifestyles and engage in a positive way with their minds and bodies.
Philosophical Statement
Rationale
This yearly plan is designed for grade seven students (about age twelve). We believe that this is a crucial year in the developments of attitudes and beliefs about physical education, as well as, their skill and performance abilities. We have developed a plan that is engaging and beneficial to all students no matter what their gender or ability. Our units are designed to incorporate accommodations and extensions that provide students with the chance to develop their skills at an individual level. We want to use self-assessment to help students create reachable goals for themselves and feel successful. Peer teaching will also be an on-going strategy used to help students embody these techniques and learn about teamwork, responsibility and respect.
We have divided our units up per month, beginning with field hockey in September. Throughout the year, we plan to break the units up by working on a different activity every Friday. For the months of September and October the students will be playing cooperative games and team building activities. During the rest of the week in October, they will learn Ultimate Frisbee. In November, they will participate in gymnastics and their Friday activity will switch to dance for this month through to February. December will bring curling and other target games. After the winter break, students will begin basketball and then in February move on to volleyball. March will be dedicated to outdoor education and then in April they will play tennis and badminton, with Fridays continuing with outdoor education for the remaining of the year. Soccer will be the game focused on in May and then baseball/softball will end the year in June.
We want to spread out different movement categories so that different skills are being frequently reinforced. Our intention is also to break up activities so that the students are not doing too much of one activity and getting bored or discouraged by it. We hope to appeal to the interests of all our students in some way.
The seasonal climate has played a big factor in how we planned out our year and we hope to use the outdoors as much as possible. We believe that it is necessary for children to play outside whenever they can to get much needed fresh air and get in touch with their physical environment.
The units we have chosen to include in our yearly plan are field hockey, ultimate frisbee, gymnastics, dance, outdoor education, and basketball. Our focus is to develop the invasive games category in particular and cover dance, gymnastics, and alternative environments activities.
We have divided our activities for the year as follows:
•32% Territory/Invasion games
•16% Net/Wall games
•8% Batting/Fielding games
•8% Target games
•16% Outdoor Education
•8% Gymnastics
•8% Dance
•4% Cooperative games
The territory/invasion games that are developed here include: field hockey, ultimate frisbee, and basketball. These games are geared to teach the students strategies in offensive and defensive play and on-the-ball and off-the-ball movements. The students will work on skills and techniques that can be transferred to further games within this category. Our other focus for this yearly plan emphasizes outdoor education. We want our students to get outdoors and experience the natural environment. Through activities such as, hiking, rock climbing, and canoeing, students will learn more about the interactive activities available to them in the Victoria area. The gymnastics and dance units are driven to give opportunities for the students to express their creativity and become more familiar with their bodies. Finally, the cooperative games unit that will be done at the beginning of the year will instil teamwork and community that will be integrated into the rest of the year.
