Supplies: 3 Hula hoop, 25 floor hockey sticks, 30 cones, 20 bean bags, 20 wiffle balls.

Class starter/warm up: students freely practice passing to each other using the hockey sticks and beanbags. (2 minutes [4 in a real class])

Management: Bring Class in with a double whistle. To increase Time on Task have the students who are getting it and seem bored because of the activities ease help set up the next game. This will ensure that the students are managing their own space. Teacher talk time should be about 2 minutes with demonstration between each game for introduction and reflection at the end of final game for a total of 8-10 minutes.

Tactical Problem: Successful execution of passing skill.

Game: Floor Hockey

Lesson Focus: Accurate passing over increasing distances.

Objective: Players will become able to accurately make passes to each other.

Game 1:

An adaptation of “Piggy in the Middle” using a 3 vs. 1 strategy game. Marking the four corners with cones or bean bags (Space) and having a goal marker, have 1 person guard the goal (target) and the 3 others passing and scoring. (10 minutes)

Conditions/Rules: One beanbag per group, four markers and a goal marker. Each successful pass is added up until the goal marker is hit with the beanbag. The “goalie” or defender must rush the person with the beanbag and guard the goal with the intention of making it difficult for the other to gain a pass or shot on the target. The 3 others must try to pass and gain points by obtaining a higher number of passing and scoring on the goal target to secure their points. Once a score is made the person who scored must take on the “goalie” position. The “goalie” must not become stagnate next to the goal marker.

Goal: The object of the game for the team of 3 players is to achieve a greater amount of passes before scoring. The object of the game for the “goalie” is to defend and prevent passes from happening. This is a game that works on passing, defending and strategy.

Game 2:

Pass the beanbag back and forth from stick to stick with very little movement on the part of the receiver. With each successful pass with the beanbag, each player takes a step back (Space). Upon the completion of 5 successful passes, the partners can then repeat this game with a wiffle ball. (4 minutes)

Conditions/Rules: Each unsuccessful pass results in a return to the original position. An unsuccessful pass can be the result of either a missed pass, or the receiver having to take more than one step to receive the pass.

Goal: Five successful passes with a wiffle ball.

Game 3:

Deke between the five cones without losing control of the beanbag, followed by one successful pass to a receiver waiting at the start of the line. (5 minutes)

Conditions: Successful completion of the course with a beanbag will result in the opportunity to attempt the course with a wiffle ball. In order to simplify this game a few player who wish to practice the techniques could do the drill without the final pass to the next player by simply rotating turns and having their own bean bag or setting up the cones in a square and doing a continuous loop.

Goal: Successful completion of the course with a bean bag.

Game 4:

Repeat Game 1 and observe the increased knowledge and skills of the players/students. (10 minutes)

Conditions: Same conditions, but the students will feel a greater sense of accomplishment and skill. If we wish to extend this game we would exchange the beanbag for a wiffle ball.

Goal: Successful execution of passing skill, accurate passing over increasing distances.

*As we walk around throughout entire lesson instruct students on proper stick handling and demonstrate proper receiving/passing positions. Make sure to give positive feedback to all students in such a way that they can learn from the feedback.

Closure:

What did they learn?

Students focused on strategy, skill development with stick handling, passing and movement to open space.
