MANGERIAL ROUTINES
Equipment
v Each student gets one racquet and at least
one shuttle
v Racquets will be counted at the end of each
class to ensure that they are all accounted for
v Students who volunteer to put the nets away
after class get first option of racquets for the next class
v Students will be asked to do a small make-up
assignment if they throw, or toss the racquets or engage in any other activity
that may damage the racquet
Positioning
v If the teacher is addressing the students,
the students should ideally be in a semi-circle around the teacher; the teacher
should be able to see all of the students when addressing the class and be
visible to all students, especially if the teacher is demonstrating something
v If a demonstration is to be provided on
a court, all students will view demo from the same side of the court, preferably
a couple of feet back from the side line
v The teacher will always keep his/her back
to the wall to ensure that all students are within his/her range of vision
v The teacher will wander the class in an
unpredictable pattern when providing feedback to the students – this helps
to ensure that the students will remain on task because they will not know
when the teacher is coming to them
v When using command style of teaching, the
students should be well spaced from each other and should all be performing
in an area in front of the teacher
v If students are to find a place in the gym
to practice a skill, teacher should ensure that students are aware that a
minimum spacing is required to perform the skill safely (the amount of spacing
between students will depend on the skill being performed)
Pairing
v The teacher will attempt to create a positive
environment in the class by having different pairs at least every day
v Teacher will get students to switch partners
at least once per class
v If pairings are up to the students then
students are to be told that their participation marks will go down if they
are consistently pairing themselves with the same person, or group of people
v Ideally each pair will get one court, however
this is often not possible because of lack of courts in a gym. In this
case there will be two groups per court. Pairs may have to work with
each other cross-court (e.g. serving) and if this is to happen, the teacher
should provide students with a demo of how four people can work on a court
like this
v Modifications can be made to make pairings
more even for mini-competitions
Feedback
v Teacher should give at least a couple positive
feedback remarks to accompany any corrective feedback
v Teacher should ensure that all students
are given an equal amount of their attention for feedback
v Teacher can praise good performances of
individuals or pairs before the class and have those being praised demonstrate
skill to the class. Highlight why theirs is a good performance
Demonstrations
v Use the students to demonstrate whenever
possible
v Ensure that students are comfortable giving
demos prior to getting them to perform in front of the class
v The same students should not be used for
demonstrations all of the time. Try to include as many students as possible,
reserving the easier demonstrations for the less-proficient player
