INTRODUCTION

 

Philosophical Statement

 

In our Physical Education classes we are hoping to provide a base of knowledge in regards to the topic (sport) at hand.  We intend for our students to thoroughly enjoy our classes in hopes of assisting them to develop a love for physical activity and active health.  We hope that our fun-filled unit of badminton will lead students to develop a healthy and active lifestyle.

 

 

 

Entry Level Outcomes:

 

-Within the class, there is a wide range of skill levels, from students who have never played the game, to students who are able to perform many of the skills at entry level.

 

 

 

Exit Outcomes:

 

The students should be able to:

Demonstrate proper forehand grip

Demonstrate the ready position

Execute the overhand clear

Execute serves according to opponent’s position

Execute net-shots

Execute the smash

Carry on a proficient rally with another student

Play a match of doubles and singles

Demonstrate some understanding of spatial awareness

Effective and efficient court movement

Clear understanding of the rules

CLASS ROUTINES

Managerial Routines and Organizational Time Savers

 

EQUIPMENT

Half the class will set up the gym while the other half warms up, the half of the class that didn’t set up the gym takes the nets down (will rotate tasks weekly)

Ratio of one racquet and three birdies to each student

 

 

CLASSROOM RULES

Proper gym strip

No foul play

No gum or food

No negative comments

Respect must be shown for equipment, facilities, other students, and the teacher

Students must be punctual

 

 

PARTNER ALLOCATION

Students will be required to get a different partner each class and will frequently switch partners between different drills. This will allow them to encounter a variety of different skill levels and develop strong social skills

 

 

TEACHER POSITION

Students will sit in a semi-circle such that all students will have a clear view of the teacher or demonstration

The teacher will be close enough that all of the students can see and hear clearly

There will be no distractions behind the teacher

 

 

SPECIAL NEEDS (Hearing impaired, Down syndrome)

Despite the fact the student with Down syndrome will be working with their aid on a daily basis, maximum inclusion into the classroom will be emphasized, such as partnering activities

The student with a hearing impairment will be placed on a court where they can see all potential hazards, such as a court where a collision cannot come from behind them

For both special needs students, the teacher will discreetly monitor their comprehension ability after each set of instructions has been given

 

 

 

Safety Considerations

 

-The gym should be free of any obstacles and safety hazards

-Teacher should ensure that all equipment is in safe working order

-The floor should be clean and dry

-Proper individual spacing (students respect individual space in order to avoid collisions)

-Proper gym strip (extra strip will be available for students without strip)

-Jewelry should be removed

-Teacher should be aware of the emergency action plan
