Managerial Routines and Organizational Time Savers

It is important as teachers to implement managerial strategies and organizational time savers to maximize student time on task. Here are a few ideas that may aid in giving students as much time as possible "doing" rather than "waiting."

1) Keep explanations short (no longer than a few minutes)
  - Give 3 or 4 cues that will be enough to get them started.  You can always add more as you go.

2) Have students stop where they are and do refinements when necessary instead of always having them come to you.

3) Have music and videos cued and ready before class has started

4) Have stations set up before class
    - have students help whenever possible

5) Have equipment ready before class

6)  Do attendance while students are warming up.
    - The buddy system may help speed up attendance taking
    - Everyone has one buddy at start of Unit.  Ask if anyone's buddy is not present.
    - Give  injured or non-participating students managerial and organizational roles when appropriate

7) Partner students with language difficulties with capable students when possible.

8) Make students accountable for putting equipment away whenever possible.

9) Clear Behavioral expectations.
Example: no talking, or playing with equipment while teacher is giving explanation or directions

10)  Putting students into pairs and groups:

- Have them buddy up.  Number them off (1's and 2's)
This will allow for you to change partnerships (1's put up you hands) (Find a new partner without their hand up)
This will allow for you to give out duties: (1's come and get two bean bags and 2's find a space on the floor)
This will allow you to join groups together when you need to make larger groups.

- 2 sets of stickers with numbers 1-15. each student has to dance with a new #  when we say switch. This ensures everyone dances with everyone.

- have them line up by birthdate, month etc.,- number them off.
