Unit Learning Objectives

The Learning Objectives of this golf unit will be based on the three curriculum organizers of the BC IRP.  These curriculum organizers are as follows:

                                          1. Active Lifestyle           2. Movement          3. Personal/Social Responsibility

Active Lifestyle

One of the most important considerations in this unit plan, is promoting an active lifestyle.  It is important for students to gain an appreciation and develop and cognitive understanding of the importance of an active, healthy lifestyle.  The objective of this unit is to introduce and expose the students to a new activity that they most likely haven't experienced.  By introducing this new activity, it takes a step away from the traditional basketball, volleyball, soccer mould that is found in most high schools and has been blamed for the lack of student participation.  Since this activity will be new to most students, we feel that there will be a more even playing field that will promote participation and give the students a greater opportunity for success.  The confidence that the students will gain in succeeding at this activity should help them gain a better appreciation for the game, sport, and active living in general.

Movement

The psychomotor objective of this golf unit is to allow the students to let their mind work with their body in transferring skills that they have gathered from previous experiences and applying them into this activity.  Students will gain a greater appreciation for the game and also a greater desire to play the game of golf when they realize that some of the skills that they have previously learned can be used again under a different context to play and succeed at golf.  Realizing that the movement patterns are similar will increase their mental game as well as their physical game.

Personal/ Social Responsibility

The game of golf has an extensive list of rules and regulations to adhere by along with a guide as to how to behave/act while you are on the course.  These rules for play and etiquette make golf an enjoyable and high class game that can be enjoyed by all if the guidelines are respected.  The ten lessons covered in this unit will try and cover as much as possible, but it is in playing the game and being exposed to certain situations that the student truly learns the how social and personal responsibility affect the game.  The objective of this golf unit is to give these high school students an appreciation for the personal and social responsibilities involved in the game of golf and hopefully this new appreciation will be translated into everyday living.
