Managerial Routines

Student either is using the ball or it is returned to bin.

For these lessons, there are a number of progressions where it goes from all students needing a ball, to only one ball needed per group of four, etc.  It is important for safety and other reasons to not have basketballs laying all over the gym floor.

Each student is in charge of his/her own equipment.

If a students ball goes bouncing or rolling away, only that student is responsible for his/her ball.  This way every student is concentrating on only his/her ball, preventing a number of possible accidents and/or class disrupting situations.

Injured or "no strip"  students play to the best of their ability.

Student who don't particularly like gym will often not bring gym strip to get out of having to participate. To avoid this situation gym is mandatory for everyone as long as they have appropriate footwear.

Know what equipment is going to be used during the lesson.

This may not always be possible, but is obviously very time saving if it can be done. Also try and check regularly to ensure that the equipement is in good condition and safe to use.

Pinnies MUST be put in box if NOT USED.

This goes along with the 2nd statement. This is for safety reasons, as a pinnie laying on the floor is very difficult to see, and is very slippery.

Students have 5 minutes to get changed and sit on the bench.

Giving the students a time line makes them change immediately. Those who are not out of the change room on time must do a small disciplinary action. You could also give rewards to those changed quickest.

Dismiss students 5 minutes before end of block to change.

This gives the students ample time to get changed, or shower up in time for next class.  If any more time is given, the students will have time to "escape" into the hallways, disrupting other classes.

Bathroom used before and after class.

This is mainly because of the short gym periods. If students need to go to the bathroom they can go before or after gym simply by writing their name on the blackboard.

Hands up for questions.

This allows the teacher to pick who he wants to hear answer. Also this prevents blurting out when asking probing questions. It also allows the entire class can hear the students' answer and learn from it.

Change students' partners if not working well together.

Lots of tasks in this lesson are performed in partnerships, and if 2 students can not work together productively, they should be split up.  You can make a mandatory rule of "everyone find a new partner" in the middle of a task so this split up doesn't look obvious.

When the teacher blows the whistle, all students must stop what they are doing immediately and sit down in front of the teacher.

For safety reasons as well as for the teachers convenience, this helps decrease distractions while the teacher is talking, and it is harder to bounce a basketball from the sitting position compared to the standing position.

Gum chewing is not allowed in the gym at any time.

To help keep the gym free of sticky messes and to avoid having students choking, gum is not allowed in the gym at any time.

No hats are to be worn in the gym.

For safety reasons students are prohibitted from wearing hats in the gym. If a hat should fall of while running it could cause the student to slip and injure him/herself or another student.
