BLOCK PLAN - Four Lesson Rugby Unit

This block plan is an outline of a potential progression for a four lesson rugby unit.   Links within the block plan go to task/game sheets.  The task/game sheets contain teaching points, organization points, diagrams and images or video clips.  The unit is designed such that all tasks/games can be performed both indoors in a gym or outdoors on a field.

Lesson focus:   Running to open space in order to receive a pass.  Being able to perform a "rugby style" pass.

Maintaining Possession and Invading Opponents Territory 

Lesson focus:   Running straight with the ball and supporting the ball carrier in order to gain territory and advance to the goal line.

Creating an overlap situation and being able to exploit that situation by advancing the ball or scoring.

Lesson focus:    The  development of  the ability to elude defenders and create and exploit an overlap situation.  Off the ball the players must learn to support from a position of depth.

Maintaining possession of the ball and working as a team to progress the ball down the playing area.

Lesson focus:  The development of the ability to read play and make decisions accordingly.  Passing to an open player, running straight and supporting from depth.
