Managerial Routines:
Equipment:
-
Equipment needed for the Grade 7 Basketball Block Plan: Stack of
cones (~30 cones), 30 pennies of four colours, 30 basketballs and possibly
courtyard balls or other similar size balls. A gymnasium with a minimum
of 6 baskets is required for most lessons.
Procedures:
-
Pre-class routine: Students have approximately 5 minutes for
changing. When ready the class meets in the gym and assembles in front
of teacher. No play before class since there is an organized class warm-up.
-
Stopping and Starting Activities: Students attention is attained
by start/stop cues ("And Stop", " Everyone In"). For lessons involving
dribbling, a whistle may be desirable to gain student's attention.
-
Distribution and Collection of Materials: Students collect
own balls from cart, and replace own balls in cart between activities and
after class. If in groups or partners, teacher numbers or assigns a person
to return/collect equipment. Pennies are handed out by teacher at beginning
of class and returned by each student.
-
Use of free time: The planned lessons for this unit plan involve
no free time; however if circumstances call for free time, students will
be encouraged to play previously taught games (i.e., Horse, 3 on 3).
-
Housekeeping: Attendance and all housekeeping at beginning
of class.
-
Dismissal of Class: Class is dismissed after post -class
discussion and once all equipment is returned. Some students are asked
to aid teacher in collection of cones etc. The students are given a few
minutes to change for next class.
Classroom rules:
-
Speaking in class: Alike any class, it is desired that
the teacher has all the student's attention. If one student is talking,
the student is asked by the teacher to pay attention. If the talking contains
isolating the student either at the front of the class or by sitting down
elsewhere. If the problem is ongoing, the 3 strike system will be used.
-
Bathroom: Students have to ask for permission to use
washroom and must return promptly. Only one student is allowed to use the
washroom at a time.
-
No strip: If the student forgets his/her strip they
will either complete homework on the stage or be given a task such as peer
or teacher assessment. If they consistently forget strip, the 3 strike
system will be used.
-
Misbehavior: "Goofing off" or "Horseplay" is not to
be allowed and will be dealt with promptly. Discipline will be based on
the three strike system.
1) Student is forewarned of misbehavior and the consequences
2) Student is formally talked to in class, and possibly after class
3) Student is dealt with by either parents or principal, or a form
of discipline is implemented (Detention etc.)
