Managerial Routines
The managerial processes that take place in the class
can be broken down into the following sub categories: (a) Introduction,
(b) Groupings, (c) Equipment Management, and (d) Rules.
a) Introduction: (What are the first activities that take place
before the lesson and how do they work?) Examples include:
-
Students can be asked to line up in preparation to walk through the school
halls to a destination (ie: gymnasium, playing fields, etc.).
-
Students can be asked to sit in specific alignments upon arrival of the
destination (ie: circle, semi-circle, straight line, etc.).
-
Following similar activities when concluding the class.
b) Groupings: (For both a managerial and organizational point of
view students should be grouped. These groups can then:
-
Be placed easily into specific areas of the playing surface.
-
Be combined or divided easily to form games of different size or skill.
-
Be given specific tasks to decrease down time (inactive time).
-
Be broken easily to give each participant a specific task.
-
Be changed often to keep students from always playing with the same people.
-
Be used efficiently when there are less balls then students.
c) Equipment Management: To increase management efficiency, materials
should be:
-
Placed where it will not cause injury.
-
Laid out in easy to find piles or groups (ie: balls with balls and pinnies
with pinnies.)
-
Be returned to similar position/formation as it was taken.
-
Accounted for and prepared so that numbers are similar to the number of
students.
d) Rules: (To keep the class running efficiently and smoothly some
rules must be set in place.) They can include:
-
Hold the balls while the teacher is talking.
-
No one talks when the teacher talks.
-
Moving from a central point (during instruction) in the gym to peripheral
areas (and vice versa) quickly.
-
Students without gym strip should be asked to sit out during class.
-
Students who are late for class should be asked to complete some sort of task. (ie. take the attendance list to the office, etc.)
