Organizational
Strategies
SPACING
-
Use whole playing field (allows for optimum performance of
students, and it is also promotes safety because the players will not be
all squished together.)
-
When communicating with the students, bring them in to a
small group, so that they can all hear the teacher speak. The teacher
should also position himself in a space where he can see the whole group.
-
Drills/tasks will all be played in the same direction of
play. Maximizes space, and increases safety.
FORMATIONS AND GROUPS
-
For drills and in class learning of various skills, students
either choose their own partner/group or are put into groups by the teacher.
-
Students are randomly put in groups for game play at the
beginning of the unit, and use the same groups for the duration of the
unit. Makes transition into game play very quick, because teams are
already put together, however, it also limits variation in game play because
players are always with the same group of people.
-
When playing culminating games, start off with very modified
versions of the game, using only 3-5 players per team. As the skill
level of the players increases, start having larger teams. Starting
off with smaller teams, it is easier for the teacher to detect and correct
mistakes. It also gives the players more hands on experience, and
this gives them more confidence and it also progresses them towards becoming
a better player.
-
When playing games, start off with non-specific field positioning,
and progress up to specific positioning. It is important to allow
players to try all of the positions, and try all of the various responsibilities
of each position.
-
Formation should be flexible enough to adjust to the players'
development of skill and basic knowledge of principles of play.
BEHAVIOUR
-
Player's motivation is partly a result of the coach's enthusiasm,
or lack thereof.
-
When a student is speaking out of turn, the first response
of the teacher should be to either move closer to the student or ask the
student a question about what was being discussed. If this approach
does not work, and the student continues to speak out of turn, then the
next step would be to single the student out by saying their name, and
then saying their name and asking them to stop talking.
-
Swearing is not permitted in the classroom.
-
Important to respect other classmates and the teacher.
-
Important to be on time and to be wearing proper gym strip.
Those who do not comply, will lose marks from class participation.
ORGANIZING THE EQUIPMENT
-
Know prior to lesson what equipment is going to be needed,
and have a plan on how it will be organized.
-
All equipment should be brought out and set up in it's own
holding bin (milk crates, hoola hoops, etc.)
-
Students do not play with equipment until instructed to do
so by their teacher.
-
Once equipment is out, students do not take different equipment
until they have returned the equipment they are currently using.
-
When switching tasks, or at the end of the unit when equipment
needs to be picked up, designate a couple of students to do it.
ORGANIZING FOR SAFETY
-
Don't allow students to start an activity until there is
proper supervision (ie: the teacher is present)
-
Don't allow students to use equipment until instructed to
do so by the teacher.
-
When doing drills, make sure that everyone is working in
the same direction.
-
Make sure there are no objects (extra balls, pinnies, hats,
glass etc.) on the playing field that can cause players to fall and hurt
themselves.
