BLOCK PLAN - Four lesson Rugby unit

The block plan is an outline of a potential progression for the unit of teaching Rugby. Links on block plan go to task/game sheets.  The task/game sheets contain teaching points, organization pointers, diagrams and images.
 
 

Lesson 1 
Tactical Problem
Picking up and running with the ball.
Lesson focus: 
Introductory task/game
  • picking up the ball and holding it comfortably, looking for a pass.
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
  • Passing proficiency.
Culminating Game: 
  • 2 full field games of 7 on 7 rugby
 
Lesson 2 
Tactical Problem
How to keep possesion of the ball while under pressure. 
Lesson focus: 
Introductory task/game
  • Passing the ball to a target with minimal pressure from a defender.
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
  • Accurate, or at least more accurate passing.
Culminating Game: 
  • 2 full field games of 7 on 7 rugby
 



Lesson 3 
Tactical Problem
Keep possesion and supporting the ball carrier.
Lesson focus: 
Introductory task/game
  • passing and moving to open space
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
  • Accurate passing followed by an effective move to provide space for the next pass.
Culminating Game: 
  • games of 3 on 3 rugby. (approx 5 total)
Lesson 4 
Tactical Problem
Accurate passing under pressure, while supporting the ball carrier. 
Lesson focus:
Introductory task/game
  •  Passing and moving to open space with pressure from defender.
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
  • passing quickly and accurately under pressure and moving to create space and support.
Culminating Game: 
  • 3 on 3 rugby (Approx 5 total)
