Three-Man-Weave
Game/Task Outline

Tactical Problem: Creating space in attack with efficient passes and covering.
Skill development: Develops students' understanding of efficient passing. Allows understanding how to pass while running down the field. Covering and supporting is emphasized in this game.

Teaching Points:
  • Proper passing technique. Inside of foot, using both feet. Square up to target, then while using proper weight transfer and force generation, step with non-dominant foot and pass.
  • Cover open spaces by following passes. This allows the students to understand the importance of keeping the attack space spread out. Clustering should be avoided, this game helps students understand that they do not need to be so close to each other to be effective.
  • Keeping up with the pace. Important to receive the passes on the run. No passes should drag a student behind. It is more efficient if the pass is in front of the student/player, rather than behind them.

Ball begins in the middle. Initial ball carrier opts for either side. Weave begins once players follow their pass and cover teammates original position.

Organizational Points:
  • Number students 1 to 3. Student #1 can go get a ball, while the other two line up for the activity to begin. Let the students decide which side they want to be on. All three students rotate positions any how.
  • Teacher can have a small line up behind first group, because the next team of three can proceed as soon as the first group reaches half way. This allows no students to be idle for more than 2 seconds. A constant flow begins once the students understand the basic tactics behind this game.
  • Can have another game in progress on the other half of the field, or same field if designed properly. Two separate games can proceed on same half field as long as they are parallel. The only downfall is that there might be problems with passes interrupting the other game.
