Grid Passing
Game/Task Outline

Tactical Problem: Creating and using space in attack.
Skill development: To support teammates, this game shows how students will begin to understand the importance of locating space, so new angles are produced. Non-verbal communication improves, as students will acknowledge that the ball carrier or supporting player want repositioning to occur through eye contact and body language.

Teaching Points:
  • To understand the value and use of support.
  • Always be moving, looking for open spaces to help support others.
  • Receive the pass on the run. Important to have control of the ball before exercising a pass. Absorb the ball with foot. Do this by cradling the ball as it approaches the foot.
  • Make easy passes, preferably a straight line.
  • Use angular passes if and when students reach a high rate of successful completions using straight line passing.

Students with no object must locate an open space to receive a pass. Once initial ball carrier has given the pass he/she must cover teammates position, therefore move to open space. No defender.

Organizational Points:
  • Use of 3 students only in this game. One can get a ball, while the other set up. A teacher can use 4 students in this game if one agrees to be a coach. Ensure that the students have been instructed about some basic concepts about this game prior to continuing with a 4 student/coach approach.
  • If a student coach is implemented, then rotate positions after a certain amount of time or completions.
  • As students begin to understand the tactics of this game, introduce new rules. Angle passes only, one touch passes and/or fakes before a pass.
