On-the-Run Shooting
Game/Task Outline

Tactical Problem: Attacking the goal.
Skill development: Shooting. Receive ball and execute quick shot on target. Timing runs and one-touch control.

Teaching Points:
  • Passer to make firm passes. Passes made so the shooter does not have to reach back to get it. Pass the ball so it is ahead of the shooter.
  • Shooter must time runs to the goal accurately. At the cone, the shooter waits for a cue from the passer. The cue can be as soon as the ball is released from the passer's foot.
  • One-touch control is encourage during the initial phases of this game. Can use either side of foot to maintain control of the ball. Once control has been achieved, then the shooter uses the outside of the foot to push the ball into desired attacking area.
  • Shooter must be in motion during the whole drive to the goal. Even when controlling the ball, the shooter can still be in motion.
  • When in position to shoot, choose a specific target in the goal. This will act as a guide for subsequent shots. The feeling of the previous shot will help the student realize what direction the ball should go.

Student at goal line passes to shooter while on-the-run. Emphasizes the importance of locating space and moving to it. Forces off-the-ball movement.

Organizational Points:
  • In partners, number students 1 and 2. 1's get the ball and 2's get the pylon.
  • On one goal, teacher can have a single file line up on the goal line and behind the cone. Students will not be idle for more than two seconds, because the next couple can begin as soon as the first couple have shot and collected their ball.
  • Ensure no shots are executed when students are behind the goal/target.
