Triangle
Game/Task Outline

Tactical Problem: Maintaining possession of the ball.
Skill development: Passing balls on the ground using the inside and outside of foot with defensive pressure. Decision making and spatial awareness.

Teaching Points:
  • Face the direction you are passing.
  • Non kicking foot planted next to the ball.
  • Using Accurate and firm short or long passes.
  • On-the-ball shielding to protect the ball. Use of fakes to elude defender.
  • Off-the-ball support for passer. (i.e. rotate to get open and receive a pass.)
  • Understand spatial significance. (i.e.. use open areas to receive passes).

Begin this activity with cones to set up boundaries. Students will understand the spatial significance in this game. Take away the cones to add tactical complexity. Encourages students to solve problems and make better decisions.

Organizational Points:
  • Use grid to designate where the triangle must stay in. Extend or simplify drill by increasing or decreasing size of grid.
  • Use the whole play space designated for drill.
  • Defender must attack the ball. (i.e.. no zone defense)
  • Switch up defense and offense when the ball goes outside the grid or when the defense successfully steels the ball.
  • Apply triangle offense to game type situations.
  • Make partners team up with another set of partners to create a group of four.
  • Use one ball per group of four, number the students 1-4. (#1 get the ball, #2 set up the grid, #3 Finds a safe play area, and #4 starts as defender).
