5-on-5 Game (no goalies)
Game/Task Outline

Tactical Problem: Creating space and defending space in attack.
Skill development: Covering and positioning. Consistency in passing, locating space and forcing players to open areas.

Teaching Points:
  • Support each other when ball carrier is need. Do this by repositioning, allows the ball carrier to observe new angles to make efficient passes or drives.
  • Cover open areas on the field. If a teammate/classmate moves to another area, then a player should cover that vacant space.
  • Communication. Make sure the ball carrier knows where other teammates are, in case of support. On defense, communicate with fellow defenders about oncoming offensive players, repositioning and areas that would help delay the attack.
  • Using space in attack. Shield the ball if offense, and shield body with off-the-ball movements, so a passing lane opens up. On-the-ball skills such as, using the whole width of field, helps students dribble and maintain ball control freely.

Teams rotate after 5 minutes. Chance to see different tactics and skills levels.

Organizational Points:
  • Number the students 1 to 4. Teams 1 and 2 play each other and 3 and 4 play each other. Rotate teams (tournament style) after 5 minutes.
  • Use both halves of the soccer field to carry out both games.
  • Restart play with throw-ins and free kicks. If throw-ins have not been taught, then proceed with free kicks.
  • Free kicks are simply kicks from out of bounds that allow the game to be restarted.
