Managerial Routines
Maintenance and Collection of
Materials
-
Balls, cones and pinnies are in a bin
to start the class. They may be spread out prior to activity so that
when students are assigned to get a ball for example, there is not a mad
rush of people all to the same area.
-
Have different students each
day that are responsible for setting up the necessary cones and getting
the pinnies or balls for their group.
-
At the end of class have the same students
be responsible for the collection and return of material. Make sure
that you alternate student selection from lesson to lesson so that they
all are involved. This participation should assisst in developing
personal and social responsibility.
Appropriate Strip
-
All students are expected to participate
to the best of their ability regardless of whether or not they remembered
their strip.
-
Students that do not bring strip will
have to participate in a make up lesson that will occur once a month after
school. Each lesson missed because of missed strip will mean an equal
amount of time in the make up class (Penner et al., Cedar Hill Jr. Secondary,
2000).
-
There are to be no impeding clothes,
low cut or cut-off shirts. A makeup class will be required if proper
attire of running shoes, shorts, jogging or track pants are not worn.
Beginning a Class/Starting an activity
-
The procedure to enter the gym will
involve having students line up under a designated number so that the teacher
can easily mark them present or absent after a 4-5 minute allowance for
changing.
-
The second option is having the students
name a different country (fruit, sport, etc.) if they are present (ie Jane=Canada,
Paul=Sweden, Stu=Scotland)to begin the cognitive processes that important
for learning. This is a good way to get students to start thinking
in the morning or just after lunch.
-
Starting an activity will involve a
quick review of material presented in the previous class to give students
a clue of what is going on. This is a good time to use guided discovery
method of teaching where the teacher asks specific questions that are meant
to have students analyse and construct answers about learned material.
Stopping activity/Speaking
in Class
-
Minimize down-time and maximize
time on task. Keep the level of administration short to prevent the
loss of student attention.
-
Commands should include: "andddddd...stop"
in a loud, clear voice (Hopper, 2000). This will prevent the yelling
of stop, stop, stop, stop, which students will get sick of hearing.
Additionally, "Hold the balls" is another very good command not just
for basketball but volleyball, handball, football and soccer.
-
During the explanation of games and
skills students should wait until the teacher has had a chance to explain
and then raise their hands if there is anything that is confusing or hard
to understand.
Groupings
-
In a coed class having the boys step
forward and numbering them off and then doing the same with girls prevents
a whole team of girls or boys.
-
Another great suggestion is to designate
one student each day as the odd person out. That way no one feels
left out because this one student is always going to form a group of 3.
Every day the odd person out changes.
-
The following ways of organizing students
has been offered by Mosston and Ashworth:
1. teacher selects partners
2. pairing by height
3. pairing by skill
4. select a partner
5. pair up with the person
next to you (1994).
Rules
-
Simple rules for all students which
will make the class run smoothly
1. Hold the balls when told.
2. Only positive, constructive
feedback is given.
3. Hustle in when asked.
Dismissal
-
Any questions students have about the
day's lessons should be wrapped up before they are to change.
-
Students have 7-8 minutes to get changed.
Those who are finished changing early must wait by the door until the bell
rings. Showering is recommended.
-
Again, certain students will be responsible
each day for collecting the pinnies, cones and balls if needed.
