2 Corner Drill/Task

Tactical Problem: Moving and receiving the ball with your teammates / How to score
Skill development: Simple passing and receiving skills / Scoring a try

Teaching Points:

Tactic

  • maintaining possession while completing simple ball exchanges in varying situations
  • how to score
Skill
  • simple ball handling (passing and receiving)
  • pop passes, wide pass, posting (scoring)
  • head up / communicate
Pops / Passes:
  • soft pops for receiving player to run on to
  • lead the receiver, don't throw it at them
Posting:
  • bend knees, two hands, apply downward pressure on ball, ball should be stationary after post
 Picking up:
  • head up, bend knees, two hands, step over the ball
Organizational Points:
  • one ball for a group of six
  • two cones ten meters apart
  • three players behind each cone facing other three in single file lines facing each other
  • make as many groups as possible, can be done with smaller or larger numbers (the smaller the number the less rest and the more ball touches)
Drill:
  • first player in line has ball
  • runs toward opposite line and pops ball to first player in that line (#1)
  • this player repeats action by taking ball back to next player in the opposite line
  • receiving players should start to leave early so pops occur in the middle
  • once successful at pops, players should advance to wider passes by changing their angles of run (#2)
  • after passing, introduce posting (how to score)
  • posts should be done three meters in front of opposite line for them to have a small run up to ball before picking it up
