Recognizing Gaps and Overlaps

Tactical Problem: Decision making / recognizing gaps and overlaps
Skill development: Draw and pass / handling skills / hitting a gap

Teaching Points:

Tactic

  • decision making, when to make the pass or when to fake and take the gap
  • recognizing gaps and overlaps
Skill
  • same concepts of previous handling drills
  • taking the open space
  • using the unmarked teammate

Organizational Points:
  • three joined channels, ten meters long by five meters wide
  • one ball minimum needed (can be passed to next group after each round)
  • two cones two meters back at end of channels for defense to start from
Drill:
  • three attackers go down individual channels
  • two defenders come up the channels, first defender always comes up first channel, second defender chooses channel two or three
  • first attacker starts with ball, draws defender and passes to attacker in channel two, if channel two is free attacker takes the gap and goes through to score, if defender comes up channel two then ball is passed to attacker in channel three for him/her to score
  • defenders can't leave their channels
