BLOCK PLAN - Four lesson soccer unit

The block plan is an outline of a potential progression for the unit.
Links on block plan go to task/game sheets.  The task/game sheets contain teaching points, organization pointers, diagrams and images or video clips.
 
 

Lesson 1
Tactical Problem
 Passing to and finding open space.
Lesson focus: 
Introductory task/game
  • Three on three end ball. One player at either end of the grid (team is facing their player at the endline). A goal is scored when a pass is recieved behind the endline.  Three passes before you score.  Play starts from the end zone.
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
  • Four in a grid.  Stationary partner passing.  Progress to passing while moving in grid.
  • Three on one. Defender in middle of grid.  Other three at corners of grid. Passive, then active defender.
Culminating Game: 
  • Same game as introductory game.  This time four on four. Five passes to be completed before a goal can be scored.
 
Lesson 2
Tactical Problem
 Maintaining possession of the ball and moving it to open space.
Lesson focus: 
Introductory task/game
  • Two on two end ball. In order to score you must pass to your partner who is standing behind the end line. Must pass from within a zone (ie. no lob passes). After goal is scored the positions are switched.
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
Culminating Game: 
  • Three on three end ball with offensive palyer behind tdhe end line. Scoring pass must be with in set boundaries.
 
Lesson 3
Tactical Problem
 Shooting and scoring on net.
Lesson focus: 
Introductory task/game
  • Game is called World Cup. Five people in each grid (1 goalie, 4 players).  Everyone vs. everyone. If you score, you advance to next round.  First three advance. Next round, first to score wins and goes in net.
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
  • Semi circle that focuses on shooting a stationary ball.  Group class into partners. Eight groups of partners at either end of field at each goal.  One person outside of 18 yard box shooting.  Partner is behind net to retrieve ball. Switch after every shot.
  • Give and go. Focuses on shooting a moving ball.  Two lines at each net.  Two passers at each net.  People in lines have the balls.  They pass it to passer and passer passes it off(give and go).  Shooter runs up to ball and shoots it on net.
Culminating Game: 
  • Split field into thirds.  Five on Five. No goalies, but the defender can become a goalie two feet away from net(in the crease).  Two flags at either end as nets.
Lesson 4
Tactical Problem
 
Lesson focus:
Introductory task/game
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
  • Go and give, player runs towards net with no ball, they recieve a pass and take a quick shot (only allowed 1 touch)
  • Give and go, player leaves line with a ball and lays off to the passer. Ball is passed back and the player must make a quick shot. 
  • Extension, add in more than one passer. Ball carrier must make quick passes and then finish with a quick shot.
Culminating Game: 
  • Three on four in a small area around the goal mouth. After goal is scored the floater (fourth player), plays for the team who got scored on.
