BLOCK PLAN - Four Lesson Volleyball Unit

The block plan is an outline of a potential progression for the unit.  The progressions used can, and should be adapted depending on the classes reaction to the lessons.
Links on block plan go to task/game sheets.  The task/game sheets contain teaching points, organization pointers, diagrams and images or video clips.
 

 

Lesson 1 
Tactical Problem

Moving into appropriate space and preparing to receive a ball from the other team in a game situation.

Lesson focus: 

  • Consistent performance of fundamental skills in a game situation.

Skill Objective:

  • Develop an understanding of when to a particular skill is or is not appropriate. 

Introductory task/game

Skill/Concept development tasks/games
Culminating Game: 
  • 2 v.2 Small Court Games.
    • rally point system
    • underhand serve only
 
Lesson 2 
Tactical Problem

Consistent execution of fundamental skills

Lesson focus: 

  • Improving Fundamental skills

Skill Objective:

  • Completing accurate passes, particularly forearm pass, to teammates and across the net.
Introductory task/game
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
Culminating Game: 
  • 2 v.2 Small Court Games.
    • Forearm pass only
    • MIN. 3 hits per side; no maximum hit rule.
       
 
Lesson 3 
Tactical Problem
 Performing an accurate attack and the proper methods for defending attacks.
Lesson focus: 
Introductory task/game
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
Culminating Game: 
  • Tournament game play
  • 5 teams of 4 people
  • Round robin
  • No overhand serves
Lesson 4 
Tactical Problem
 Performing consistently accurate attacks and blocks.
Lesson focus:
Introductory task/game
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
Culminating Game: 
  • Tournament game play
  • 4 teams of 5 people
  • Round robin
