CONTENT ANALYSIS
Content will be broken down progressively for tactical understanding and skill development (Hopper, 1998).  The relationship will be basic skill to play, then from game play to skill development and back to more challenging game play (Thorpe and Bunker, 1989).  Skills will be broken down into off-the-ball movements and on-the-ball skills (Griffin, Mitchell & Oslin, 1997).

Tactical Problem
On-the-ball skills
Off-the-ball movements
Moving into appropriate space and preparing to receive a ball from the other team in a game situation.
  •    Forearm Pass
    • Strong base:  legs shoulder width apart, knees bent, weight on the front of the feet.
    • Solid platform:  hands together, elbows turned together, minimal gap between arms.
    • At contact don't swing with the arms; "accuracy over power".
    • Initiate pass with the legs, pushing up through the arms.

  •    Preparation for pass
    • Athletic ready position; knees bent, weight forward on balls or feet.
    • predict trajectory of the ball quickly.
    • move body into position behind ball.
    • movement should be side to side and not up and down.
Consistent execution of fundamental skills

  • Overhead Pass (Set)
    • Form a triangle between the thumbs and index fingers.
    • Contact with the ball should occur directly above the head.
    • Arms should be extended all the way above the head; follow through is very important.

  • Preparation for pass
    • Athletic ready position; knees bent, weight forward on balls or feet.
    • predict trajectory of the ball quickly.
    • move body into position behind ball.

  • Preparation for Overhead Pass
    • Athletic ready position; knees bent, weight forward on balls or feet.
    • predict trajectory of ball quickly.
    • move behind and under the ball.
    • head up, shoulders square to target.
    • movement should be side to side and not up and down.
Performing an accurate attack and the proper methods for defending attacks.
  • Attacking downball
    • Hit for accuracy over power
    • Identify open space to hit to on other side of court before hitting the ball
    • Make contact with ball slightly ahead of your body, with arm fully extended
    • Concentrate on run up that you are comfortable withàR/L/Up with both.
  • Block
    • Watch the movement of the ball rather than the player before the attack
    • Time the block with the attackers jump
    • After making the block it is important to get in a position ready to make a pass

  • Preparation for attack               (base position)

    • athlete stands upright reading the trajectory of the set.

    • starting position will usually be at or behind the 3M line.

    • usually right leg is slightly forward.

    • Reading position of opposing team prior to hit.

  • Block

    • The feet are shoulder width apart and knees slightly bent.

    • Back straight, arms/hands held in front of the face about 30cm from net.

    • Stand slightly back from net to give appropriate room to jump.
