BLOCK PLAN - Four lesson tennis unit

The block plan is an outline of a potential progression for the unit.  Depending on the response of students this progression could be adapted.

Lesson 1
Tactical Problem
To make shots that make use of space/position selves on court to make a return
Lesson focus: Introduction to the forehand stroke.
Skill objective: Execute a forehand stroke with moderate ease.
Introductory task/game
 Ball bounce game
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
Partner game in quadrant
Questions:
    "What do you need to do to score?"
    "What skill is needed?"
Introduction of  Teaching Cues for Forehand Stroke:
Self bounce /Side to side toss
Culminating Game:  *Grip to be discussed next class. 
Lesson 2
Tactical Problem
To position oneself in the court as to be able to execute a forehand pass. 
Lesson focus: Forehand stroke, rules of Queen of the Court (Monarch of the Court)
Skill objective: Refine the use of the forehand stroke.
Introductory task/game
Modified Castle game
Using hula hoops/or skipping ropes (formed into a circle) with a cone in the middle.  Bounce ball into hoop/circle using forearm stroke.  1 point if ball bounces inside circle, 2 points if cone is hit.
Stretch
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
Review forehand using teaching cues for forehand stroke.  Discuss grip
Practice forehand shot.
Culminating Game: 
Lesson 3
Tactical Problem
How to maintain possession.
Lesson focus: Simplified game format of tennis.
Skill objective: Extension of forehand stroke, and basic service rules.
Introductory task/game
Queen's Court
Stretching (Optional: teacher led to be more on task.)
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
1. Group discussion and explanation of court lines, and Service Rules.

2.  Extension of Queen's court, in doubles, using service rules, starting with a Drop Serve.

Culminating Game:  After playing for approximately 5 minutes, blow whistle and have students who are on the Queen's court advance to the back of the line in the next court.  At court number 4 (of 4) the "Queens" will then move to the end of the line of court 1.
Lesson 4
Tactical Problem
 To make shot that make use of the whole width of the court /to position self on court to return wide shots.
Lesson focus: Introduction of the backhand stroke.
Skill objective: Execution of a backhand stroke with moderate ease.
Introductory task/game
Ball bounce game
Skill/Concept development tasks/games
Partner game in quadrant
Questions:
    "What do you need to do to score?"
    "What skill is needed?"
Introduction  of teaching cues for backhand stroke
Self bounce /Side to side toss
Culminating Game: 
Queen of the Court
Have students focus on the use of their back hand.
