Off the Ball Movements

Moving to space is necessary to be successful in all territory/invasion games.  It can draw away the defense, opening up more space for a teammate, or allow a player to receive a pass unchallenged.

Off the ball movements include covering, support, gaurding/marking, and adjusting.  Other abilities integral to these movements include base and decision making.

Terminology:

Cover - defensive movement in relation to object being played by an

opponent (cover space) or provide defensive help for player

making a play on the ball.

Support - off-the-ball movement to a position to receive a pass when

                player’s team has possession.

Guard or mark - defending against an opponent who may or may not

                            have the ball

Adjust - movement of player, offensively or defensively, as required by

the play of the object in the game.

Base - the body position of the student when executing a movement or

            skill.

Decision Making - the ability of the student to decide when, where, in

relation to what, how much force to use, and is it the

least risky movement for the goal I want to

                                accomplish.
