Why Brian wants to become a teacher

At first, I wanted to become a physical education teacher because I loved participating in physical education and playing sports. As a youth I was always encouraged to take part in any and every sporting opportunity by my parents and always had plenty of competition from my older and younger brother. In my school in Kamloops, I had nothing but positive experiences and I wanted to pass on the passion and enjoyment that physical activity can bring. As I have progressed through the UVIC EPHE program, I have learned that wanting to have fun and teaching sports to youth is not my only reason for wanting to become a teacher. Teachers are role models and are important figures in the school and community. Teachers have the opportunity to teach life lessons through sport in the classroom and in roles such as coaches. Above all physical education teachers have the opportunity to teach students the importance of living an healthy and balanced lifestyle, which is becoming more and more important as youth generations are starting to adopt sedentary lifestyles. What I hope to bring to my future school is a positive attitude, hard work, and lots of fun for my students to experience the joys of physical activity.

Why Lauren wants to become a teacher

I want to become a physical educator because there is a significant opportunity to motivate future generations to adopt a positive and healthy lifestyle. I have enjoyed sports my whole life and am heavily involved with volleyball and soccer. I would like to share my passion and knowledge for sports with the future generations as I feel there is an opportunity to motivate them to participate in lifelong physical activity. I feel it is important to acknowledge that the physical education environment has progressed from an instructional environment with drills to an opportunity enriched environment where discovery is the focus for game appreciation and skill development. I am eager to use the Sports Education model and the TGfU model to show students that the physical education is more than skill development. The physical education environment is about participation, communication, leadership and having fun. As a future educator, I hope that I will be able to motivate and encourage students to participate and enjoy not only the activities, but the knowledge of health and fitness which I have grown to know and love.
