“Partner Switch”
AIM:
•Get students to warm-up for following activities, and re-introducing the read, react, respond and recover skills that are crucial for the Partner Switching game.
•To continue the rotation with the other team for as long as possible, therefore, hit the bird nice and high in order to make it easy for the other team to return it.
METHOD:
•Using the singles badminton court, in a group of 4, students will divide themselves in to two teams of two.
•One partner will serve the birdie from one side to the other side from inside the boundaries, and then quickly swap places with their partner who will return the birdie as it comes back to their side. When exiting the court, the student must touch the cone behind the court with their racquet before re-entering the court.
•Must practice quick thinking and moving.
Introductory Activity:
Overhead Clears
Teacher DEMO

-In pairs, students will attempt to hit as many overhead clears to one another as possible without allowing the birdie to touch the ground. Students must keep track of their score.
METHOD:
•In partners, on partner will start be serving the birdie high allowing their team-mate to start with an overhead shot. Then partners will attempt to hit continuous overhead clears to each other with allowing the birdie to hit the ground.
SKILL:
•Students will use proper movement techniques for getting into the position and will execute proper form for completing an overhead smash.
•Teaching Cues:
o“Back-scratcher” High Contact Step Through Wrist Snap Follow-Through Recover
Questions to check for student understanding/ learning:
oIf you want to make contact with the birdie over your head, where do you need to move your body?
oWhat stance do you want to have when hitting the overhead clear?
oWhere do you recover to on the court?
Introductory Game:
Overhead Clear Game
AIM:
-Students will pair up with a NEW partner, and will attempt to hit overhead smashes into the back 1/4 of the court, which will be marked by cones.
-Students will use the proper overhead clearing technique to make contact with the birdie overhead and send it into the designated area.
Rules for the Game:
•Partners will alternate in attempting to hit the birdie into the designated area. One partner will start by hitting a hit shot above their partners’ head in the court area, and the other partner will attempt the shot into the designated area.
•1 pt will be earned for each team when a birdie is hit into the designated area. Teams will be competing against each other for an allotted time.
Questions to check for student understanding/ Learning:
oRe- emphasize previous teaching points/ cues
oWhat made the overhead clear shot successful? What did each player need to do well?
oWhere do you want to make contact with the birdie with an overhead shot
Introductory Game:
Smashes – “ATTACK AND DEFEND”
AIM:
•Students will learn to hit an attacking shot. With a partner, students will use half a badminton court (whole court if available), and hit a smash shots into a designated area.
METHOD:
•With a NEW partner, students will take each have a racquet and a birdie. Using the ‘No Man’s Land’ cones, they will setup a line, which they will need to smash the birdie behind away from their partner but in the court.
•One partner will begin as the defender and will serve the birdie to their partner, the attacker. The attacker is trying to hit the birdie into the defender territory while the defender is trying to return the birdie back over the net to the attackers side.
SKILL:
•This shot is very similar to the overhead clear, but the student needs to make contact with the above them and also in front of them, accelerating the birdie into the defenders territory.

Overhead Clears
Aims:
-Start in ready position
-Strike the birdie above the head
-Try to hit the birdie into the back ¼ of the court
-TEACHING CUES:
oready position
ofeet staggered
oback-scratcher
ohigh-contact
ostep-through
owrist snap
ofollow through
orecover to T
Extension:
Decrease court-size/area, aim for targets placed in back corners of court.
Simplify:
Make the target area larger.
Modify space to even game if required.
-Recover back to the T between every shot
-Quick movement to get under opponents shot.
Smashes
Aims:
-exaggerated lateral movements
-bent knees, ready position
-feet staggered
-score by hitting birdie to the sides, keep your opponent moving
Extension:
Make no man’s land bigger
Make boundaries wider.
Try to hit with greater force
Simplify:
Make target area larger,
Expand boundaries
-feet stay staggered and knees bent
-move quickly from side to side
-step forward with non-racket foot
-maintain balance
-What stance gave you the most success for quick movements?
Culminating Activity:
Partner Play – “MINI-GAMES”
AIM:
-Using the overhead clear and smash shots in a game to score points on your opponents. You are not allowed to use drop shots.
-A second game will allow the students to find NEW partners and will allow drop shots.
METHOD:
•Using the same court step-up as the smashes activity, students will play a mini-game to 25 points focusing on using the overhead clear and smash shots. Students will score points by landing the birdie in their opponent’s area. A shot hit out-of-bounds gives the opposing player a point.
SKILL:
•Students are to implement all skills learnt in lessons so far:
