EDUCATIONAL GYMNASTICS – TASK PROGRESSION FOR GRADE 3 CLASS.

 

Grade 3.                       Mrs Craigmyle              Number 21 (15 boys, 6 girls)

 

Intent:

Develop students’ ability to use basic rolls (side, forward and back safety), balances (including monkey stand and headstand) and jumps with safety and control in a gymnastic sequence.

Develop students’ ability to go on, off and over apparatus and partner.

Develop partner balances taking weight on a platform.

Introduce and develop idea of taking weight on hands.

THEMES FOR LESSONS

Lesson 1: Travel on and off mats.  Balancing on different body parts.

Lesson 2: Travel on, off and over apparatus.  Balancing and roll.

Lesson 3: Change of direction.  Partner sequences

 

Equipment: 21 MATS.  4 benches. 

Digital camera.

Introductory activities: With mats scattered about the room:

  1. On signal move into spaces around mats.  Increase speed and change direction.
  2. Run around corner of mats without touching the mats.  How many mats can you go around?
  3. Avoiding mats find a space between mats then do a high jump with a good landing

Organization:  Spread out mats.

Rule: No landing on mats.

BT - "Avoiding mats travel on your feet, change from one or two feet back to one or two feet."

ST – “Jump high and land, toes, knees and up.”

ET – “Jump as high as you can.  Stretch arms and legs.”

AP – “Showing a clear beginning and end develop a sequence with three different jumps.”

(2) Lesson

Organization:  Spread out mats.  5 benches, 2 box tops and 3 ‘A’ frames.

BT – “Using a piece of equipment show me different ways of jumping on and off the equipment.”

ET – “Can you jump over as well as on and off the equipment.”

Organization:  One student, one mat.

BT - "On a mat nearest to you where nobody else is, show me a long thin roll traveling from one end of the mat to the other.  Return back.”

What other types of rolls can you do?

Demo: “Side roll with arm lead.”

ST – Tuck up into a tight round shape then rock and roll over like a ball.

ET – Combine a balance with a side or log roll.”

“Working with a partner and a piece of equipment develop a sequence with  2 different rolls, balances and jumps, and a change of direction”
