SCHOOL VISITATION #1

 

Grade: 2, Mrs. Ramsey                        Students: 20

Equipment: various balls (organize into 3 hoops), 23 hula hoops, 30 assorted sized balls

Learning Outcomes: TSWBAT:

-         recognize and work in personal/general space

-         refine running, stopping and change of direction technique

-         roll and collect balls of various sizes

-         work cooperatively with another student

-         create a game using skills from class.

Introductory Activity:

(Review: Working in space, Stopping and Change of direction).  Select a hoop and explore different ways of rotating the hoop around your body.  Hoop drop in a space.  Running around space avoiding hoops.  Practice stops. 

Hoop Hunt.  Aim:  To split step in as many hoops as possible.  Rules:  (1) One foot must be in hoop, (2) Cannot count same hoop twice.  Add on (3) Cannot go in same hoop as someone else.

Ready Position (Base).  Balance. Faking.  Direction and speed.  Awareness of space.  Dodging (hips).

With hoop spread out in the gym, filling the space when I say go, walk into empty spaces then quickly return home.

      Same gain except this time I want you to run back to your hoop showing your best stop.

Run quickly to hoop and fake going in a different direction.

See how many hoops you can fake.  Rule cannot fake the same hoop as someone else.

Hoop attack.

Send half the group to a hoop.  Rest of students avoid being tagged. How many hoops can you get past without being tagged?

Swop roles.

Push off to change direction.

Rolling and collecting

1. Select a ball find a space and roll against a wall.  Try to collect the ball before it goes past you.

Change ball.  Add a partner

2. Roll against wall for partner to field.

Focus on getting in-line, low and behind the ball.

Increase of decrease distance from wall.

1. With a partner roll the ball for partner to collect.

2. Roll the ball through partner’s leg to a wall. (3’s roll with partner in middle, swap regularly.) Collect and return ball to partner.  Teacher swap roles.

Application

Grade 2’s – With a student-teacher 2 hoops and a ball make up a game.  Decide how you score and how you start the game.  Can you make a game where there is rolling, faking and collecting?  Show some games

(Not:  This is only a skill progression for a lesson plan.  Organizational tasks and notes to self as a teacher would be needed for a 'real' lesson plan)
