Lesson 3: Maintaining Possession
Lesson 3: Maintaining Possession
Learning Outcomes:
Cognitive: Understand thought process of shielding, movement, space, passing – why we do it? Psychomotor: Understanding how we use shielding, movement, passing etc to maintain possession – how we do it?
Affective: Leadership roles for more talented players, self esteem builder, multiple aspects of the game, encouragement, team and individual goal setting
Social: Team bonding, unity, classroom cooperation, supporting peers and teachers.
Introductory Activities: Pirates
Each player with own ball in grid dribbling trying to get other players balls out of grid while maintaining possession of own ball – if ball gets kicked out dribble one lap around grid and then re enter game
Key points: Head up, go into open space, body between defender and ball (shielding), get low
Modifications: Grid size, only right foot, only left foot
Ask questions about how your body should look if you are trying to shield the ball? Why should you keep your head up? What is the benefit of moving into open space? Should you be up high or down low?
Watch this video to see the on-the-skills and off-the-ball-movements necessary for shielding:
Skill Development/Concept: 4 vs. 2
4 corners players keep ball away from 2 defenders in the middle
Rules: must stay on/around cone, pass square/diagonally, switch defender after bad pass/interception or 5 consecutive passes
Key points: maintain possession, head up, passing to open target, communication
Questions: What is the benefit of quick passing? What is the benefit of anticipating where you are going to send the ball? Reading the play before you get the ball?
What is the benefit of using players names/communication (man on, time, turn etc)
Culminating Activity: Split Court
30x30 grid – 2 teams each have side grid, ball played into one side 1 defender from opposite team goes in, 5 passes = 1 point and add a defender with every 5 passes.
Defender has two options 1) to kick ball out of grid for 1 point 2) pass back to own team or dribble back to own side for 2 points and start game on their side.
Key points: keep moving, shield ball, support teammate Modifications: grid size – increase for losing team
After 5 point differential grid size changes
