Introductory Activities
Go over what was learned in the last class and start off with a mini game of shooting
Skill Development/Concept
Controlling in the grid.
Have students move around in the large grid controlling the ball with their hockey sticks.
Periodically have them stop and complete a task such as many touches left and right as they can in 30 seconds, then have them run again.
Next have them run and dribble around cones set out along the perimeters of the wall outside the grid Then back to the grid continuing running and controlling.
Next call out Shark attack and you have to keep your ball under control and safe while you try to steal and push someone else’s ball outside of the grid
KTP (Key Teaching Points)
Have them keeping their heads up and not running into other students
Keeping ball close to the stick, many touches.
Make sure cones are not too close to the walls so that they have plenty of space to get around them and don’t run into them.
**if their ball goes out, then they are out and must go stand in their designated corner/group number, put on pinnies, and get set up for the next game
One of the teachers will be controlling the Grid Game and the other teacher will be directing the students where to go and what to do once their out, so that the next activity can transition more smoothly.
Tactical Problem: Maintaining Possession of the Ball
Lesson focus: Stick-handling and Shooting
Skill objective: To teach the students the basics skills of stick-handling and shooting through mini games.
Culminating Activity
4 v 5 games (2 different games, using half the gym each)
Teams trying to shoot in 4 of the goals (360 hockey- see attached diagram). Two goals are nets and Two goals are made up of cones
Rules:
•Can’t check someone until they are moving (3 feet distance)
•Dribble through mini goals to score or shoot into nets to score.
•No slashing/ high-sticking ( if a student accidently high-sticks another player, if he/she tells us teachers then they only sit out for 30 seconds (without allowing another player to sub in). If he/she does high-stick another player and doesn’t tell us, then they have to sit out for the rest of the game (but one of their subs can play for them)
•If ball goes out of play, the team that didn’t hit it out gets possession to pass it back in and first pass is free (student receiving ball cannot be checked, until he/she starts to move with the ball again).
Because this class already has set teams (approx 6/7 per team) .There will be 2 to 3 subs per game.
There will be 4 teams and 2 courts which are split in half. So Court A, Court B, Court C, Court D (see attached floorplan).
(The teams will be 5/6- however ideally we would have liked to have smaller teams of 3 v 3, but we had to make due with the limited gym space)
Games will be short 3-4 min long and there will be 3 Games.
Go over Rules and check for understanding:
“When can’t you check someone?”
“How do you score on the mini nets vs the big net?”
“What do you do if you accidently highstick another player?”
“What happens if the ball goes out of play?”
Game 1
A vs. B, C vs. D
A and C will have 5 players, B and D will have 4
Game 2
C vs. B, D vs. A
There will be a Switch where Court B and D will swap. And a Sub of all players on each team so that those who were playing will now sit on the side and those that were on the side will now play.
Game 3
D vs. B, C vs A.
There will be a Switch where Court A and D will swap. And a Sub of all players on each team so that those who were playing will now sit on the side and those that were on the side will now play.
By having the two different ways to score, your working on shooting (which was learned last class) and stick-handling/ control (learned this class)
Closure
Go over what we did in class today- “controlling drill, and mini-game”
Check for understanding of what was learned today
Remind students were doing passing tomorrow.
“What skills did we learn today?”
“What are some skills we learned to stop the ball from rolling away?”
