Managerial Routines

Overview

The development of consistent and fair routines within a Physical Education classroom is imperative to ensure students are participating in a safe and fun environment. Working with students in the development of classroom rules and routines helps facilitate a framework for lessons.

Equipment

The following equipment is generally required for these lessons:

  1. Rugby Balls ( Minimum one(1) ball for every two(2) students)

  2. Cones / Spots

  3. Pinnies (Minimum four(4) different colors)

Equipment should be placed in a bin before class so students are aware of what equipment is being used for that day. All students are responsible for collecting and returning all equipment to the bin at the end of class. Students not participating actively can be asked to assist with all equipment clean up.

Procedures

During our lessons students were expected to meet at the classroom before continuing to the change room. Once outside or at the gym students proceed to the equipment room to retrieve the bin of equipment. Students already changed may use equipment while waiting for all students to arrive. Class lessons began with a warm-up followed by small games designed to focus on specific skill development. Culminating games allowed students to incorporate multiple skills into modified versions of rugby union. Dismissal of the class was usually three(3) to five(5) minutes prior to the bell to allow students time to change.

Groupings

Separation of students into pairs was usually done by allowing students to choose their own partners. During group activities students were normally separated into heterogenous groups. Often students were grouped by providing pinnies of a specific color to two different partner pairs. Pairs wearing the same colors then formed groups in larger activities.

Classroom rules

  1. “Respect Rule” - Students are expected to raise their hands during question periods and listen to the comments of the teachers and other students. Also students are expected to respect themselves, others in the class and the equipment and field or gym they are using.

  2. “Rough Play” - Rough play is not allowed.

  3. “Fair Play” - Students are expected to follow and enforce all rules of the activities they are participating in. Disputes should, if possible, be mediated by students.

  4. “Gym Strip” - It is expected all students use proper gym strip during participation. Students not in gym strip were always still allowed to participate.

  5. “Bathroom” - Students must inform the teacher that they are going to the bathroom.
