Lesson One

Teacher:  Darien Slater and Jonny Lee

No. Students: 12 turned into 40

Equipment:

12 basketballs, 20 cones and 12 pennies

Learning Intents (CAPS) – What learning do you expect from the conditions you have created?

Cognitive: The students will be able to understand the technique to do right handed and left-handed lay-ups.  They will also be able to understand and follow the rules of the end ball game.  Lastly the students will be able to know when lay-ups are appropriate in a game of basketball.

Affective:  The students will be able to cooperate with other students in a game situation to achieve similar goals.  The students will also be able to show other students the correct technique for a lay-up.

Psychomotor:  The students will be able to perform a lay-up with a degree of success for all varying abilities.  The students will be able to break down the skill of a lay-up and perform the correct footwork for either the left or right side of the basket.

Social:  The students will be able to develop a team-based cohesion.  The students will be able to interact with each other of similar and different abilities.

Introductory Activity/Game:

End ball:  the first game set up on one-third of the gym.  It is performed the same as typical end ball but after one team scores a point they then pass to a player by the hoop who performs a lay-up.  If the lay-up is successful the tem receives another point.  Jonny will be explaining the rules and modifications for this game.

Teach lay-up: go over key points of a technically sound lay-up.  Darien will demonstrate the proper lay-up technique on a hoop.

2 line lay-up drill: 2 lines, one on each side of the hoop outside of the three-point line.  Students on left side start with ball.  They then pass to the player in the right lane who performs a lay-up.  Switch sides after a few tries each.

Concept/Skill Development

Intent

To improve the lay-up skill to be used in a basketball game

Movement Tasks and Management

Students are divided on either side of the net at the three-point line.  After they shoot they move to the other line.

Extension/Simplify

Skills are to be performed on dominant and non-dominant hands.

Refinements

Performing the skill closer to the net and moving further away.

Intent

To improve territory invasion game strategies and tactics

Movement Tasks and Management

Divide students up into equal teams.  Make sure that every student has an opportunity to try lay-up and be in the end zone.  Understanding as to how to get open.

Extension/Simplify

Students learn what to do when they get open (call for the pass, hands up)

Refinements

Allowed to take one dribble with the ball – increases the understanding of movement.

Culminating Activity

We now go back to the game of end ball with the lay-ups and if lay-up success rate improves then we know that the students have learned and understood the learning outcomes for the lesson.
