Lesson Four

Grade: 6

Teacher:  Darien Slater and Jonny Lee

No. Students: 32

Equipment:

Basketballs (One per student)

Pennies (4 different colors)

Cones (14)

Learning Intents (CAPS) – What learning do you expect from the conditions you have created?

Cognitive:  The students will be able to understand when to shoot the ball in a game and where certain limb movements for a shot are appropriate.

Affective:  The students will be able to gain confidence in their ability and will achieve a degree of success with their shooting.

Psychomotor:  The students will be able to perform a proper shooting technique and use transitions to incorporate the on-the-ball skills and off-the-movement skills they have learned so far in an adult basketball game.

Social:  The students will be able to work together in teams at an adult game of basketball toward a common goal based on a point system.

Introductory Activity/Game:

-Three people in a square.  Each person starts in a corner of the square and one person has the ball.  The key is for students to move to the open cone to always create a triangle between the passer and receives.  This creates angles and lets students make the easy short pass instead of having to pass a long distance diagonally across the grid.

  1. -As a progression, add a defender into the grid.  If the passers get 5 consecutive passes without the ball hitting the ground they get a point.  Defender gets a point if he intercepts the ball or if it drops.  Once defender gets ball, switch defenders.  This progression introduces the idea of passing around a defender and moving to get open.  It forces the students to make decisions as to who to pass to and when to move to open space.

Concept/Skill Development

Intent

- Practice shooting from various positions on the court

Movement Tasks and Management

- Bend knees, one foot slightly in front of the other

- Have ball at chest level and bring up with both hands for shot

- One hand (non-shooting) should be on the side of ball and the shooting hand should be behind ball

- Release ball above head and flick wrist to produce backspin (hand in the cookie jar)

- Some students may not have strength to shoot ball high enough.  Can create a lower basket to focus on technique instead of success

Extension/Simplify

- Can do a dribble before shot

Refinements

- Use backboard and work on bank shots

Intent

- Around the world

Movement Tasks and Management

- Students shoot from different markers around the basket.  If they make a shot they move on and if they miss they stay.  Play in groups of three.  The students will have to sink 5 baskets to finish the circuit.

Extension/Simplify

- Increase number of shots, number of opportunities to shoot at each hoop

Refinements

- See above

Culminating Activity: 5 vs 5 game.  Must make 3 passes before you can shoot.  Every person has a check and must stick with their check.  Two games will be going on at once.  The 2 teams that are off can work on their lay-ups or shots on a side hoop.  The game will allow students to make decisions regarding passing, when to shoot, when to dribble, and where to move.  There could also be a refinement of making the baskets worth more points if the students get 5-7 passes first.  This will emphasize the importance of passing and supporting teammates.

Closure:  Ask the students why they should be in triangles in the first drill.  What are 3 keys to a successful shot technique?  Why is it important to be able to make decisions on the court?
