welcome
-Dribbling: the focus is on basic dribbling skills such as having bent knees, not losing control of the ball, cradling the ball (not slapping at it). As students skill level progresses they can begin to work on cross-overs, between the legs and around the back dribbling skills.
-Passing: the two main passes to focus on are chest passes and bounce passes. For a chest pass, students begin by passing the ball with two hands and trying to hit their partners target (hands out in chest area). Students should try and pass the ball with backspin. For a bounce pass, students should bounce the ball so that it will rebound up off the floor and into their partners hands. A successful bounce pass should not be too low (hit partner in shins), or too high (bounce over head). This is a difficult skill to learn because the students must use space (aim for a spot on the floor) and force (how hard to throw the ball) to get the ball to their teammate.
-Lay-ups: lay-ups are an important basketball skill because they should be the easiest bucket to make. Students want to jump off one foot as high as possible to decrease the distance from their hand to the hoop. Bring the ball up with both hands and shoot with your right hand from the right side and left hand from the left side. Aim for the top right corner (on a right handed lay-up) of the red square on the backboard. This will give the shot the best chance to go in.
-Shooting: begin with bent knees and one foot (shooting foot) slightly in front of the other. Then bring the ball up with two hands. Shooting hand should be behind the ball and non-shooting hand should be besides. Bring ball up to forehead and release with shooting hand following through (hand in the cookie jar). The ball should have backspin to increase the success rate of the shot. Make sure to shoot with enough arc so that the ball is more likely to go in.
