To me, having a meaningful role in others’ lives is extremely fulfilling, and as a physical education teacher, I feel I am in an ideal setting to do so. I entered the Physical Education field because I am passionate about sports and helping people; and I would love to extend my love of sports and physical activity to my students.
To do this, I believe that two things need to be accomplished in my classes. First, students need to have a positive experience in the PE class. I was fortunate enough to enjoy PE in high school, and I believe that this contributed to my love of sports. However, there is a growing trend of adolescents, particularly females, who have negative experiences and thus stop taking PE. I hope to engage students in ways that will increase their appreciation of sports and physical activity. I trust that if students have a positive PE experience, they will be far more likely to continue to be physically active throughout their lives.
Secondly, I feel that students need better preparation for physical activity outside of the school environment. It is great if we can engage students in PE class, but if they graduate from high school and then become inactive, it seems that a great deal of work is lost. We need to create situations where students are self sustaining in terms of their physical health. It would be tragic if we get students to “buy-in” to a healthy lifestyle, but then they leave PE class without a clue how to go about it. Thus, they need to be aware of exercise opportunities in the community, or feel confident enough to lead themselves.
I am thoroughly excited to be a physical education teacher, and start having a positive impact on students’ lives.
