LESSON 1 GAMES AND ACTIVITIES
Fuukahara
Start/restart rule:
•Player “serves” from end line by knocking ball with one hand to opponent’s court.
•Team that earned last point serves.
In play rule:
•Ball can only go under the net
•Maximum of 3 touches on the ball per side
•Ball must cross attack line before first contact
Scoring Rule:
•Point is scored when ball crosses opponent’s end line
•Point is scored if ball goes out of bounds in front of attack line before first contact
Rationale:
•Introduces tactical problems of volleyball
•Does not require high skill levels; high success rates
•Provides opportunity to explore dimensions of court
•Students can explore use of space on the court
•Teaches students to look for open space on opponent’s court
•Emphasizes off-the-ball movements
•Introduces basic concepts of volleyball; 3 touch offense approach
Castle Game (First just a Toss, Progress
to Forearm Pass)
Start/Restart Rule:
•Player tosses ball to him/herself, and plays one forearm pass
Scoring Rule:
•Point is scored when ball lands on spot
•Point is scored when opponent cannot return ball
In-Play Rule:
•Can only play ball once consecutively (can’t touch ball twice in a row)
•Ball can only bounce once
•Ball must be hit to at least head height, and must use volleyball skills to return ball (forearm or overhead pass)
Rationale:
•Introduces vertical dimension of volleyball
•Emphasizes off-the-ball movements and reading opponent
•Promotes control and accuracy of skills
•Encourages return to base position
CASTLE GAME
Pass Back and Forth over Net
•One person stands on one side of the net while the other player stands on the opposite side of the net. They pass back and forth to each other over the net trying not to let the ball hit the floor.
•They should focus on their form and accuracy.
•They can count to see how many consecutive hits they get in a certain time span (i.e. 1 minute) and compare it to the other groups.
•They can rotate partners as well, to help with class chemistry.
PASS BACK and FORTH
SQUARE GAME
2-on-2 Monarch Court
Start/Restart Rule:
•Player serves ball from boundary end line
•Team that won last point serves again
In-Play Rule:
•Maximum 3 touches on ball per side
•Ball must land within boundaries of play
•Boundaries are half size of volleyball court
(shorten by discretion)
Scoring Rule:
•Point is scored when ball lands in
opponent’s court
•Point is scored when opponent is unable to
return ball
Rationale:
•Emphasizes communication and ball
control
•Emphasizes looking for and covering open
space
•Incorporates vertical and horizontal
dimensions of court
•Introduces tactical aspects of volleyball,
including 3rd hit
•Promotes reading of opponent
Square Game
Start/Restart Rule:
•Player tosses ball towards one of the spots
In-Play Rule:
•Player returns ball using forearm or overhead pass, aiming towards opponent’s spots
•Ball must stay within 3 ft. area surrounding spots
•Ball must stay above head height
Scoring Rule
•Players score 5 points by landing ball on opponent’s spots
•Player score 1 point if opponent is unable to return ball within playing area
Rationale:
•Combines vertical and horizontal components of volleyball
•Emphasizes movement, base stance; planting of feet
•Promotes reading opponent
•Introduces passing to a target; use of hips and shoulders
•Encourages students to stay low (knees bent)
