LESSON 4 GAMES AND ACTIVITIES
FUUKAHARA
Forearm Pass Back and Forth over Net
•One person stands on one side of the net while the other player stands on the opposite side of the net. They pass back and forth to each other over the net trying not to let the ball hit the floor.
•They should focus on their form and accuracy.
•They can count to see how many consecutive hits they get in a certain time span (i.e. 1 minute) and compare it to the other groups.
•Move to set and forearm pass
PASS BACK and FORTH
3 Person Shuttle Drill
Start/Restart Rule:
•Player tosses ball over net to other player
•Rotate who tosses first
In-Play Rule:
•Player passes ball over net and runs to other side, taking place of the person they passed to. Receiver passes over net to 3rd player and runs under net to replace him/her...continue.
•Need at least 3 players to rotate
Scoring Rule:
•Have each group count the number of consecutive successful passes
Rationale:
•Emphasizes ball control and movement
•Incorporates vertical and horizontal dimensions of court
•Encourages team work
Tournament Play
Each player (at each court) is assigned a number from 1-6. They play with the given team (combination of numbers). Games are timed for 3 minutes; this includes organization.
Scoring:
At the end of the game, the losing score is subtracted from the winning score. Each member of the winning team receives this many points. The losing team gets zero.
For example:
If team 1,2,3 wins vs. 4,5,6, 8 points to 7 points:
Players 1, 2, and 3 will each write one point in their allotted column.
Players 4, 5, and 6 will write zero.
Rationale:
•fun game play rewards students’ hard work throughout unit
•provides opportunity to practice skills learned throughout unit
•forces students to work with various team mates, against various opponents
•forces students to organize and lead themselves
•3 vs. 3 allows for more involvement; provides numerous touches on ball
•3 minute games decrease score discrepancies
3 PERSON SHUTTLE
Fuukahara
Start/restart rule:
•Player “serves” from end line by knocking ball with one hand to opponent’s court.
•Team that earned last point serves.
In play rule:
•Ball can only go under the net
•Maximum of 3 touches on the ball per side
•Ball must cross attack line before first contact
Scoring Rule:
•Point is scored when ball crosses opponent’s end line
•Point is scored if ball goes out of bounds in front of attack line before first contact
Rationale:
•Introduces tactical problems of volleyball
•Does not require high skill levels; high success rates
•Provides opportunity to explore dimensions of court
•Students can explore use of space on the court
•Teaches students to look for open space on opponent’s court
•Emphasizes off-the-ball movements
•Introduces basic concepts of volleyball; 3 touch offense approach
